Would any one be so kind as to see if their local hardware store has some 4-40 set screws? My local Truevalue has an incredible assortment of screws, but does carry any that small. I need the stubby kind (for a trigger shoe), two of them. If you find some, let me know what stores carry them, or if you buy them, I will reimburse you for it.

Failing that:

McMaster Carr, or Grainger should have what you want/need

Lowes and Home Depot has them. I've purchased some from there.

Try ebay. At least it is not to much effort to try. I find that 'obscure' things you need you will find there more often that shopping around the city.

I found some on ebay, for a total of $3.50...but do I really need 25 of them? I'd rather pay a dollar for 2.

Well its your time shopping around. Would you work somewhere for an hour for $2.50? ;)
