View Full Version : Ano/Powdercoat predicament

So now that my ep-mag is finished, all that is lacking is a nice paint job. I have a problem though. The holes in my rail are filled in with metal filler which if ano'ed would most likely either not hold the ano or be a noticeably different color than the aluminum rail. However, the cooking process for powdercoating would be too high of a temperature for the filler to handle and thus I must rule that out as well.

So my question is...Is there anything out there (I'm guessing that would be similar to a powdercoat) that would not necessitate a high heat cooking phase? I almost feel like breaking down and buying some spray paint but this thing deserves better!

Hydrographics are awesome if they have exactly what you want. Duracoat is my finish of choice, however. Extremely versatile and no high temp bake requirement. Just gotta prep it right, and it's virtually indestructible..

Cool thanks. Do you know of any duracoat companies that have experience with paintball markers?

If you remove the plastic filler and replace it with Lab Metal, it can be powdercoated. That's was VooDoo told me.

Tactical Camo (http://tacticalcamo.com) does a great job. He posts as Wookie on many forums.

A quick search also turned up Customguncamo (http://www.customguncamo.com). Their gallery looks great, VERY tippmann heavy, but a couple other pieces as well.

I don't know if Spec Ops is still doing it. They'd be my first choice if I didn't do it myself, if only because I've seen them do and use mags, so they know where not to get paint.

Whoever you choose, make sure you talk to them first so you're both on the same page with exactly what you want. Also, be sure they're stripping the anodizing off (ie: media blasting). Even when abraded, anodizing is a very poor surface for any enamel type finishes to stick to, and it's been my only problem with duracoat coming off.

For example, my last duracoat job on my anodized mag had issues with Duracoat chipping off on wear prone areas such as the edges and the grip frame. One spot took a serious gravel hit that went into bare aluminum. I touched it up with a solid color. Last week, I took aircraft stripper to the whole thing to redo it. The Duracoat on the anodized surface freaked out and peeled right off. The Duracoat on the rough bare aluminum took several passes to remove. It's that big of a deal. Make sure it happens.

been talking to voodoo myself and he's a super nice guy, he did mention he can do some body fill stuff if need be that will take the heat.

I've had work done by Tyler (VooDoo) a while back and he's a great guy to work with and fast turnaround. I'm planning on sending some more parts to him this summer :)
