View Full Version : What thread is this freak back? (I was told it is A5, but have reason to doubt that)

I bought this barrel new on ebay as a 12" A5 freak barrel. Its 16" but I dont really care.

I was told the A5 freak backs have a lip preventing the insert from being pulled out of the back of the barrel, and that they have to be unscrewed in the center in install an insert.

This barrel clearly does NOT have a lip preventing the insert from being pulled out the back of the barrel.

The other barrel in the pic is an All American SP 16" cocker barrel.

Hey hey hey hold on, it's M98/98c Freak backs that have the lip; not A5. They also don't have to be unscrewed in the center; older 98 Freaks (like yours) were Spyder threaded with a 98 adapter that threaded over the end. I guess technically you have to take off the tip to swap inserts on a new style one-piece 98c back, but yours is old style and not for a 98c, so that's completely irrelevant to your situation

Have you tried installing the back on your A5? How about on an ICD marker?

The 'cat threading and A5 threading look similar, and it would be an easy mistake for you to make, or for the seller to make when shipping your item... Maybe before you smear him or complain, you try just talking to him? It sounds like an honest mistake to me, but it also sounds like you haven't even tried installing this on a marker...

Before you leave negative feedback on eBay, try contacting the seller to resolve the situation... Before you do that, make sure your reason for suspicion is legitimate. There's a reason that they put that in bold lettering on the "file a complaint" and "leave feedback" pages.

I know I know, I didnt just run to ebay and give him negative feedback... I am currently in contact with him. He is more then willing to correct it if he did indeed mess it up.

When I said that, I was trying to be sarcastic. (obviously after rereading it just seems like im a *******).

look at this guys ICD freak back, looks like an exact match to me.:

But like I said hes willing to fix it, i'm not unreasonable, everyone can make mistakes, im not planning to give him negative feedback.

Also, are you 100% sure that the A5 doesnt have that lip? Only M98 had it?

Yep. I've had both new and old style A5 backs, no lip on either.

If you look at old angel backs, they're "shorter" in the front because they require more length after the threading. Both A5 and 'Cat threading needs the little step-down you see on the back you've got there. Since the 98 (old) and 98c threading is so big and deep, it needed to be longer and thicker, and they solved that in the simplest (and dumbest) way possible; by making the whole back longer. The 98c back actually DOESN'T WORK because of that lip. It's a .689, so it's got about an inch of that bore, followed by an insert that fails to act as a control bore (unless it's .689 or bigger...), then the large barrel front. Fairly useless in my opinion; seems you'd be better with a few AA backs of different sizes for the same price.

Anyway, didn't mean to jump on ya, but I was concerned because I've had things like that happen before. Frustrating getting bad feedback selling a 14" tip to someone who didn't get that "14 inch total length when installed" didn't mean the tip is 14" on its own. Innocent miscommunication (I guess) but a pain in the butt.

Doesnt it have an inch or so of that bore because that back of the barrel is part of the breach and the bolt actually goes into the back of the barrel. So byu the time the air is released behind the ball, it is in the back of the insert.

I need a freak back with this lip because I am having it turned down to be used in my Tippmann SL-68 II. The bolt seals in the back of the barrel, when you pump it, it might pull out the insert.

So even though this is the wrong barrel, if I had received the correct one I would still be dead in the water.

On the eBay note. At work we deal with ebay on a daily basis. it still surprises me the crazy, irrational, and retarded people that come out of the wood work.
