...is just the fugliest thing on earth. Like an 8 year old throwing up a bowl of soggy fruit loops on a marker. There I said it, this is the industries 900lb gorilla in the room.

Should never have been invente, ever. Then people have the nerve to think they can get a premium for a fuggly splash job.

And what events transpired to bring you to this sudden confession?

chuey

I was looking at private label impulses, in particular the orange blue fade nasty impulse. There was a pristine one that I somehow missed for $200. WAS board and the whole 9 yards with not a scratch. It was gorgeous for a decade old marker. Granted $200 is a little steep but its still gorgeous and came out around the same time.

http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=3433881&highlight=nasty+impulse

Then I casually look for a double trigger PTP Micromag and a splash one pops up with matching splash barrel and just an old school valve. $250. What!

Right up there with pink guns. :ninja:

There was one pink and white ego I saw that looked nice, and some markers look OK in black with pink accents, but 99% of them look just plain terrible. The most hideous I've seen was a salmon/vagina-pink DC Excal that would be gorgeous if it wasn't that color, which seems to have gone unsold for months because of it.

I am kinda with you on this one. I don't HATE splash anno, but I would never get a splash job on my stuff. I will only ever buy "normal" colored parts. Blacks, chromes, blues, reds, etc...

Splash or any crazy pattern, color scheme or whatever absolutely kills resale value.

There have been some perfect guns I've seen on ebay but they've got a green/purple/nickle finish and the owners are probably wondering "why won't anyone bid on my gun? It's in perfect condition!"

To get me to buy those fugly guns you'd have to knock 200 bucks off the price and ship it to the annodizer for me to have it refinished.

So something like these is ugly??? Each to their own. I personally think they are much better thena the dust black trend that has infected everything from paintball to cars.

I like the fireball and purple one, those came out nice. splash, fade and acid wash if done in good taste can look great. but in some cases people get carried away with colors or do color combinations that have no business been together. think of it like cooking, you try a new recipe and think mmmm maybe i will add this to make it better, how about some of this, going down the line of ingredients or spice. and next thing you know you have something on your hands that nobody will touch. i think also we have all seen single color ano's that we would never add to our collection even if it was given to us for free, well maybe.

The first one is straight up splash and I wouldn't pay full price for that because I'd want to blast it off and have something different done.

I'm not really sure what to call the second pic. The skulls are pretty sweet. I wouldn't call that kind of pattern "splash".

That's really a "concept gun", and if you find the right buyer you can probably charge a decent premium for that.

And dust black can be really awesome if you put some accents on it. The ULE Mag I'm piecing together is going to have either a blue or nickel body with dust black trigger frame, grip and barrel with nickel fittings.

I have a couple of mags with various splash parts. I rather like them, so I guess it's all a matter of taste. Splash kits don't seem to last long in the BST threads, so someone must like them..... I would agree with the salmon colors though, not a fan.

Best use of skulls I have ever seen. The ano kind of hides the body milling, but maybe that is a feature.

The only "splash job" that I ever liked was on with a black gloss/matte splash. It was kinda along the the lines of a Nightkast cocker. I wouldn't really have called it a splash but I really don't know what else it would have been considered.

Splash anos can be just ugly. It really depends on the way that they are done, the colors that are used. Each one is unique, no two are the same. So, I do agree to a point. Same with acid washes, some are great, some, not so great. I have had both, and really liked the way that they turned out. But, I have seen great markers that have been ruined by anos that really did not fit the gun.

How about this one, it is neither acid or splash.

No disrespect to any memeber here who may own it, but that color scheme and style is not my cup of tea.

Truly, Xmags do not belong in "jungle" or "olive" or any sort of drab woodsy colors and schemes. There just aren't enough of them out there, and it looks like hell... Between this, the realtree one, and all the strange brown smear euros I've seen, I'm just not impressed. The only drab matte Xmag I liked was the WWII fighter themed one I used to see at F4.

So if I want to play in the woods, I have to use an xmag that has a "bling" ano? Isn't that where personal preference comes in? I understand that "to each his own" applies here but if you get a custom ano on a marker, isn't that a reflection of the owners personality? One size doesn't fit all and one color doesn't suit all. And as Neo said, "it a matter of choice". I had this marker done several years ago and when finished, it was exactly as I wanted it to be in every way. It is now the property of a very talented anodizer who said that he would never get rid of it. Granted, not for everyone.

A guy I played paintball with in high school loved to get anno jobs on his stuff. He had a cocker and bought a new trigger frame for it and sent it off to the same annodizer for a matching job, sending his barrel along as reference.

Same guy doing the work, same equipment, same everything. It didn't even come close to matching.

Maybe that's not the norm though...maybe this guy just sucked at color matching. Still, I don't think I'd risk my intelliframe. Better to just have the whole thing re-done in the same batch.

A lot of early splash anodize attempts were done just to exploit color on a marker. It was different, so it sold. Remember, many of the people that started the splash anodizing were also wearing bright fluorescent clothes in the 80s. It was hideous  . After that, many very well done splash patterns emerged. Some of them are really nice.

I recently purchased a new Bob Long from ANS. It has the new version of splash called blue marble. Its not quite like the old Smart Parts splash that I love so much but it's a good attempt to revive something old with a new twist. Pics are to big so here are the links:

Back in the day, guns came in varying shades of black and gray. SP was looking to make a few bucks, so why not put some color in the world? PTP's stuff is a bit more unique, since the guns and patterns were made independently of the guns' original manufacturers. Fast-forward to present, and every single splash kit and PK'd micro is at least ten years old. They're unique today because there are fewer of them.
Some like the patterns/colors, some don't
Some respect the old-school goodness
Some like the attention
I liked the challenge of tracking down the individual parts to make a complete set
I like purple, too
