TOTAL TENTS: 10
TOTAL CANOPIES: 10
TOTAL TABLES: 8

About half of the group going with me is going to go for the CPX camping - We will need space for at least 4 pretty good sized tents -

I will not be arriving until late Afternoon Friday and would like to try and camp relatively near some AOers I can finally put names to faces with until the alcohol kicks in.

Can someone flag off 4-6 good sized sites for my crew?

Can you park near your camp site or are all vehicles sent to the parking lot?

Thanks for any assistance

Assuming a Tent + personal space area to be roughly 10X10 I will try and keep a running tally based on replies to this post to how big a chunk of real-estate we need-

StygShore - 4 tents + 2 Table +2 Canopy
BTAutoMag - 2 tents
Skipdogg - 2 tents
Andrum85 - 1 Tent 1 Pop Up Canopy
BBotts77 - 2 Pop up Canopies for common area
Syko89 - 2 Tents
Nobody - 1 Canopy +1 Table
Andrum85 - 1 Tent +1 Table +1 Canopy
RT Lover - Relaxing in the Pool
Flatliner - 1 Canopy + 2 tables
Vintage - 1 Canopy + 1 table

Assuming camping space will also be staging space based on the newly published maps I know several people have contacted me and said they are no longer camping but wish to maintain their space for staging

If anyone lives close and has extra staging gear, I'm sure there are a lot of people travelling that don't have the luxury of hauling that stuff around with them.

how big are the camping spots? or is it just a big open field? Can you park vehicles at the camping area or do they have to stay in the parking lot? Currently we need enough space for 4-6 decent sized tents, and we are going to try and bring along a raised fire ring so we can have a campfire at night.

It's just a big open field. Fires are only allowed in grills and portable fire pits, but I think that's what you're talking about when you say "raised fire ring."

Camping areas are large, they are open spaces. But they are not sectioned off into individual campsite areas. Its first come first serve. They fill up quick though. You have to park in the parking lot with your vehicle. The only exception is if you have a RV. then you park in the RV area, and could have your vehicle nearby too. We can rope off a AGD campsite Thursday for everyone. We need a accurate tally of tents before then.

Do we stage out of the camping area or is there a staging area up closer to the action?

skipdogg
01-14-2014, 11:20 AM
Prior years their was staging. This year, the prior staging area is in the field of play. So staging this year is out of the campsite or parking lot :(
We can get the campsite area closest to field of play if everyone wants to do that.

* closest may not have decent shade though. So distance vs. shade may be something to consider.

StygShore

That would make the most sense to me - I always hated Michigan Monster game and the hike/ride back to the campsite if you forgot something or needed to load up more paint.

Maybe a spot close to the field of play, but not right on the main road so people are not cutting through our site. Is there a map of the field layout already?

There's usually at least one camp that has a generator, projector, and video games. It really wouldn't be a problem if you guys seriously did want to bring all that stuff.

Anyone else camping, this is a pretty short list if AO is supposed to have an Army attending this event.... or we are all soft and rented out the hotels :)

Don't forget camping chairs, even if you don't plan on camping. It's always nice to have a place to sit. They'll be safe over night in our common area.

They will have concessions there according to Sean Scott - But doesn't hurt to bring a few snacks and extra waters. I assume the concessions will have "captured audience" type pricing :)

The Concessions are pretty legit. Decent food/portions/prices. They dont gouge just for the event. But you'd be on your own for breakfast. I dont think it opens up until lunchish time.

They usually have bratts, burgers, hotdogs, pizza, italian beef, chicken boobs, and few other things I'm surely forgetting. It's good food and the prices aren't too bad.

That being said, I usually bring a small grill or three to cook my own, slightly more healthy food. I'm guessing we (as a group) will have a few grills and if you bring your own food, there would be room to drop it on one of the grills. I am currently planning to have at least one little Weber Smoky Joe and another small charcoal grill. I also have a small gas grill on its way to me. So, I'll probably bring that, too, if it makes it here by then.

CPX really isn't close to any stores. If you're staying in a hotel, there will be stores near there. If you aren't staying in a hotel, you can probably convince someone to drive you to a store, who is. Just ask around.

I typically bring some extra food, too. But, don't count on it because I won't have enough for everyone. ;)

This is the far NW corner of Campland #1. It really is the best place to camp and stage out of. The trees on the left block the afternoon sun and it puts us right on the netting and near the air fill stations/bus pickup.

seems to be the general consensus - most of my crew are now in a hotel, but we will still need at least enough space for staging since it sounds like we will all be staging from parking lot and camping areas

Probably one of the last few times I am checking this thread before the event.

By the sounds of it, we need to prep a staging area for the whole AO Army and anyone on the Vandals.

Currently the numbers of people camping seems to be pretty light but we need to at least claim a string of space along the netting near the insertion area to make out staging as close as possible I would think.

Do we need to start just keeping tally of popups and tables as well?

I'm hoping to be there Friday around 2:00, give or take. Have a couple of technical errands to run when I get in, but apart from that plan to offer my services to whomever needs help setting up tents, tables, or whatever. So BT, if you need help with the museum, peachy. If someone else needs a hand, also peachy.

I should be at CPX by 4:00pm on Thursday. I (and anyone else who will be there thursday) will rope off an area large enough for all of AO to camp and stage. Location will be in area #1. the exact size and location will be determined by what's already taken by others before I get there.

If anyone else is arriving Thursday, please PM me.

Most of my group will be rolling in around 2pm Friday so a very big thank you for the guys roping off space for us. Are you thinking the staging canopies should all line up along the netting or just in a clump close to the entrance?

I have 10 people coming, Original plan was 1 canopy, but we will probably bring an extra for Saturday at least, several of our guys have to leave Sunday Morning

Yeah agreed, we don't need people reaching under the net to grab our gear. Not having ever been there, I wasn't sure if that netting was in an off limits area or not. Is there anyone coming along just to hang out at camp that is willing to play security and kind of watch our staging area?

The ******* forecast will probably change a few more times in the next two days. Chicago ******* during Construction (the season that isn't Winter), is pretty unpredictable.

Speaking of Construction, if you are planning on taking I-55 South to Arsenal Rd. to get to CPX, don't. Avoid that stretch. The bridges are under construction and it goes down to a single lane there. It'll be really nice for LL8, through.
