The electric airsoft guns use a mechanism which generates a blast of air that, in some casses, can propel the bb at speeds in excess of 700 fps. These guns do this without the use of an seperate air source, and are capable of producing very high rates of fire. Why can't a paintball version be developed using the same technology, thus eliminating the need for air tanks?

Because a paintball is much larger than an airsoft pellet, for one. The electronic piston needed to propel a paintball to 300 fps would be quite large, as well as the associated (and necessary) battery. Additionally, with any sort of portable system, you'd probably only get 200 shots to the charge, because of the large draw of the piston.

Additionally, electronic airsoft guns have all sorts of problems with the triggers. They're not linked to any sort of processor, so it's just an "on-off" switch. Bad news, considering that a paintball can break where an airsoft BB can't.
