Yeah, so . . . I'm back! :ninja:

Nothing planned in the pipeline, but don't be surprised if you see me around some more lately.

If you've got something you want to see, do speak up though.

I'm at least 200% the machinist I was when last I posted here, and my shop has grown new capabilities too, so many things are possible that might not have been in the past.

Also want to shout out to Luke from Luke's Customs. It had been a long time since I'd checked in on AO and his stuff in particular.

He's doin' some serious ass kicking work these days, and it makes me grin like an idiot to see how good he's gotten.

That is all, just wanted to say Hi! after having been gone for a very long time.

Expanded into other things and needed a name that wasn't as specific as before.

I make hotrod and custom car parts now, tools and stuff for your shop, firearms and parts, and all sorts of other stuff as well (whatever comes in the door, really).

It's a mix of hired gun job shop stuff and design/manufacture stuff for myself and other people trying to get into the market.

Same as I did in PB really, just in a lot more genres of "stuff".

Did you get some new CNC machines?

Not exactly. However, I DID fix the one I had such that it would do what I told it to when I told it to. New spindle, new retention system, and a couple of new drive boards as well. Switched my CAD and CAM software while I was away, and that's all working much better now too. The CNC milling side is in tip top condition again, and has been making chips for four or five years now.

I'd very much like to buy a CNC lathe, but I can't decide whether to go with a slant bed or a gang tool machine, and work keeps fluctuating between what favors one or the other.

I don't want to buy a machine that ends up being a white elephant that I can't keep busy. Suffice to say that I've gotten very good at doing batch work on a manual lathe.

I have added some manual machines, and a lot of fabrication, tube bending, and welding equipment.

We also moved into a new shop.

Heya!

Woooo! Hey, Scott. There ARE still some old timers around! lol

Hell, EVERYBODY's still here. lol I thought the place had that certain "new server smell".

Sweet!

Welcome back!

Hopefully you're back playing again as well as looking at making new stuff.

I'm gonna dust off some stuff I had put aside when I left for the dreaded Day Job™, so we'll see if something new can come from that.

Playing will be much harder. ALL my guys are scattered to the winds. Some got married, some died (for the purposes of paintball, essentially the same thing as getting married), two or three joined the Army/Marines and are now in different countries, etc, and the closest walk-on field is ~100 miles away.

On the up side, all that money I would have spent on paint instead gets spent on tools and ammo (which is similar to paint, only with a copper jacket ;) ).

Besides, to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure my knees are up to it anymore. I'm a lot closer to 40 than I was when I left. lol

;)

Yeah, I'm 36 this year. Just a whipper snapper to some folks, but I've noticed that my knees seem to think that they're closer to 60 than 40.

I went out shooting last weekend, and it was like 98 degrees that day. I had to wring out my shorts before I went inside at the end of the day. lol

I could probably pull it off, but if I spent much time playing from my knees like I did years ago, I know I'd be feeling it the next day.

Spent too much time in the shop without anti-stress mats, several years into the machining thing at least before it dawned on me why my knees and feet hurt so much all the time.

Now I've got 'em everywhere, but the damage might already be done.

Losing weight will help too, but what can I say, I like cheeseburgers and BBQ.

Lost about 40LBS over the holidays this last year, but had to get (or rather notice and then get rid of) cancer to pull that off. That's a ****ty weight loss plan, BTW, I do not recommend it.

Just now starting to get back on song again, so almost seven months to get over that. Spent almost eight weeks under doctor's orders not to lift anything over 10lbs after my surgery (and unable to sit at my computer either, so it was stretched out on a recliner with various bits propped up here and there to reduce swelling). You would not believe how many Hallmark movies fit into eight weeks. I'm just gonna leave it at that. lol

Anyway, suffice to say that I'm glad to be back up and around and working out in the shop again. A man can go plum stir crazy being forced to sit still for that long with nothing to do but watching basic cable.

Happy that your health issues/problems are behind you.

I too have bad knees, but 10 years ago, i was smart enough to start playing with knee pads and they help immensely. Hell, i am starting to look at those silly comfort old people's shoes that Ringo Starr is hawking. Just because being on my feet for 9 hours a day my feet can't take it anymore.

But i just want to say, thanks for killing the resale value of all your old UMFs out there ;)

Can't wait to see what else you have brewing. Welcome back.

"Knee problems" had the same problem for the past 6 years or so. Besides my age, it's probably due to all the years of going heavy on squats in the gym and working construction for most of my adult life.
Started taking a supplement called MSM along with vitamin C that is necessary in order to absorb the MSM. Literally over night I was able to do deep knee bends (no weight) without any pain.
After about 6 months of taking it religiously, my knees rarely hurt except on occasion after leg days in the gym.

I'm also on a regiment of vitamins and various supplements that has given me a new lease on life. :)

If you want to design the UMF II to be a drop in pneu-mag using my T-Rex assembly I'll share the necessary geometry. All you need to do is make the top cavity a smidgen wider and longer toward the trigger. Plus you need to add a 6-32 threaded tab in the back of the frame. There is plenty of room for the change, just a thought...

You may want to thread and tap your trigger rod for 4-40 set screws. I have modded quite a few of your frames in that regard.
If you're interested in my grip panel geometry I can give you that too. If I remember correctly mine are pretty close to fitting your frame. If it worked out it would give everyone more options for various grips, right now mine wont cross fit any other frames.

UMF would always fit an AM/MM rail, they just don't have the wings that the original frames had. So long as you've got that rear bushing in place, the wings are not necessary for proper function.

Now, fitting a UMF with a VA on a standard length AM/MM rail is another matter entirely. ;)

What file format can you import? I can do most of the popular ones.

I have AutoCAD2002 and Solidworks 2008. If you're using a newer version of Solidworks, I'd suggest an .IGS file, 'cause I won't be able to read the newer .SLDPRT file.

If all you have is 3D, I can make my own 2D geometry from the model. If all you have is 2D, I can make the solids myself, no worries either way.

The biggest things that need to be perfect are the points where your stuff will intersect with my stuff, so I can make sure the fitment is correct.

Grips wise, I might try to make them use both, since the original UMF's took standard .45 grips.

Does DYE still use the DM4/5 grip pattern? Those were some hella nice grips, and they left a lot of realestate inside the frame for people to put pneumag/electormag guts. That's what I used on the Ripper frames, but I've not paid attention much since then to see if that style of grip even exists anymore.

What do you mean by "trigger rod" on my frames? The rod is on the sear, which comes from AGD, right? Are you talking about the trigger pivot pin? Or maybe the adjustment screws in the trigger itself? Kinda confused there. I'm sure it's just a nomenclature thing I'm not grasping.

I can send you both. The .sldprt file would be for the older version.

I'm using ONEcnc XR5 Expert cad/cam (3d or 2d)

What I'll be sending you is a solid with dimensions but you can pull dims. right from the part.
What you will get is a solid which which represents the negative space you need in your frame. It will also indicate where you need the tab with a 6-32 tapped hole. You'll need a tap extension because a standard tap is a little short.
All you have to do is drop it into your model lining up the thumbscrew and front grip frame screw and flush to the top.
It has bosses for the trigger pin and safety assembly to verify proper alignment in your frame. If your safety and/or trigger pin has been moved from factory location (which I dont believe you did) defer to the the grip frame screw location.
I'll also send some cutaway pictures that will be better explain what I mean. Any questions we'll figure out after you get the file.

The biggest things that need to be perfect are the points where your stuff will intersect with my stuff, so I can make sure the fitment is correct.

As long as my model fits into your frame like a glove the T-Rex will operate properly. No fudging, the fit should be dead nuts, easy to do once you see it. ;)

Grips wise, I might try to make them use both, since the original UMF's took standard .45 grips.

I'm not sure your grips would cover the holes for my grips. It's no big deal I just thought I would put it out there. :)

What do you mean by "trigger rod" on my frames?

Oops I miss spoke, trigger pin, not rod.
You sized your trigger pin holes a tad large to allow anodizing to close up the hole to retain the pin. Now days everyone is just drilling and tapping two 4-40 holes to hold the pin instead hammering or pressing in the knurled pins. It makes it nice and clean and easy to assemble/disassemble. Super easy mod, forming taps are your friend. ;)

I gotcha, all good then. Since they're an 1/8' pin, a #6-32 form tap will go right in that hole, no muss no fuss. That's a good idea that won't take much effort to implement.

Also, if you've still got a copy, could you send along the 2D version of my UMF?

You're not gonna believe this, but I cannot find any of my PB related CAD files. I've been digging for hours now, and bumpkis.

I'm really hoping I've got a backup burned to CD over in the shop someplace, otherwise I'll be starting from square one again.

One thing I couldn't add to your frame was a magnet for the trigger return, you designed your frame for a wider than stock trigger. ;) It's just a counter bore to house an E-Mag style trigger magnet.

Yeah, none of it is difficult, it's just more time in the drawing phase.

I'm not cooked yet. There's two or three whole computers I need to look through over in the shop, and if those are bare, there's half a dozen hard drives that I can scour as well (though that starts to become a little bigger PITA).

I doubt they're truly GONE, it's just a matter of finding them again.

That's easy enough to remedy, probably with a large thin fine thread set screw that the magnet will stick to. That lets you adjust the return force as well, by moving the magnet up and down in the frame. That's how I did the Shocker and Impulse frames I did years ago.

Hit me with the files you're willing to share, and I'll keep digging on this end for my own files.

Thanks much man, again, I really appreciate the willingness to collaborate.

Now for the big question. Where do you get your anodizing done? All the people I used to use A) sucked, and B) are gone now.

I've got a local place that does my firearms stuff for me, but they only do black type III and maybe clear III, and they don't do any finishing work, so if you send them in as-machined, they get coated as-machined, (or bead blasted, etc.) and I don't have the time to do the machine work AND polish everything before ano.

If we in the aftermarket could find just ONE good anodizer, we'd be in tall cotton, and things would be 100% simpler.

I've used AvTech/NICO before, and they did good work, but the last time I sent them a batch of 100 parts to be polished, they sent me a note in the box when they were done, telling me that they don't want to do them anymore. lol Since they're a big place, they don't need my piddly little amount of business, so they fired me as a customer 'cause my stuff was too much work. They want to do like the local guy does, just dunk it and ship it, no finish work.

No worries on the timeline, I'm not in a big rush. Good luck with your production run, but be careful in the shop when you're tired.

I've found out the hard way that [Machine Shop + Tired Machinist = Much Higher Scrap Rate], and I've seen via Practical Machinist that sometimes it also equals Maimed/Dead Machinist.

The machines don't care. They'll cut meat and bone just as easily as metal or wood, and won't even think twice about it.

We have the dubious honor of working in a place where pretty much everything wants to kill us at all times, so you've gotta keep your wits about you.

Stephen was a 5 week turn around for my gun that was 26 or so pieces. It was also a 3 color reverse faded acid wash. I also know Arc or something did the entire run of Boston Paintball Twistr autocockers, and that was way more parts combined than any run of frames that Coolhand would do. I have a feeling that guys like Arc, Caustic, or FX would be willing to do runs for any of these guys if they reached out with enough lead time. All 3 do very good work.

Now, fitting a UMF with a VA on a standard length AM/MM rail is another matter entirely. ;)

Thats what I meant, to me if it doesnt fit with a foregrip it doesnt fit.

I even put one on me Sydarm, a tiny one meant for an AR.

Hi Ryan, glad to see you back. Just a heads up, when I click the link in your sig I get a message saying my firewall blocked it because of malicious content...was able to google it and access it with no problem but thought I'd make you aware.

What firewall are you using?

Google got all het up about my site about a year ago, and when I got with their people to iron it out, turned out nothing was wrong, they just flagged me because I wasn't linked to by any "reputable" sites.

The whole damned internet is being divided up into little fiefdoms run by Google, MS, Apple, etc, and they "flag" anything outside their control as being somehow malicious, 'cause it's easier to just exclude everyone who isn't you than to actually detect and stop real malicious software.

They get to look like they're protecting people, while simultaneously kneecapping their competition (or really anyone not explicitly on "their side").

Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook arent trying to cover it up any more the fact that they want to rule the world, at the cost of giving crooked governments all your personal info.

Using the latest version of Google Chrome, and SpySweeper is the only other firewall software I have installed, so it's one of the two. Please excuse my computer illiteracy, maybe you can replicate it by clicking the link from someone else's device.

No worries man, I appreciate the heads up.

I can't get it to replicate from anything I've got access to right now, but I'll keep bothering people until I find someone else with the newest Chrome.

I'm a FireFox guy, even though it has become obvious that the people working on FF hate their users and want to make just another Chrome knockoff.

. . . but I digest. ;)

I've been pondering a few things, but I've not had time to get back to any of them.

Mulling a few different rail designs (AM and RTP style), as well as a couple of new frames, but nothing is fully formed yet. Certainly not enough to give details on or post CAD mockups of.

What's something you guys would like to see? Problems you're having with the gear you've got now, etc?

If you made a gas through grip frame, many would love you. Either single or double triggers with an integrated foregrip like the emags have. Obviously there would have to be some kind of fitting either coming out of the front or the rear of the frame. Along those lines, if you went the opposite route of uni bodies and made a uniframe, I think that could be popular. It would give any user of agd type bodies the ability to just drop their body and valve in the frame and go. No second rail to worry about.

I'd buy a foregrip like the stick gas thru that RPG made.

What ever you decide to make just please offer it black anodized.

I understand there are some that want custom anodized stuff but I'd bet

at least half just want black.
