Does anyone else like fishing as much as I do?

I want this thread to be a fishing thread. Tell your stories. Post pics. whatever.

I've started catfishing lately and it's more fun than Bass fishing. But I've got a question. I've been using mostly dip baits lately with great success, but I wanna try large live baits(carp, bluegill, etc)but can't find a rod/reel setup that can chuck a 1+ lb bait and 8oz.+ sinker. Anyone know a good combo that could do that. thanks.

So no one on AO likes fishing?

For big catfish I'd use a small surf casting set up. I shore or boat fish mostly for stripers here in MA (and the ocasional Bluefish). I did a lot of Bass fishing when I lived in TX. I wish I hadn't sold my Bass boat before coming back up here.

I have been bass fishing... You two have any suggestions for bait/lures? I have been using twigtails and some spinners... Twigtails seem to work, what you think?

Where are you fishing? Down South the Bass get bigger (warmer water) so Texas rigged rubber worms and spinner baits are good choices (plus they are mostly weedless so you don't have to worry about getting hung up). Up North you might need smaller lures like Mepps spinners but the Texas rig still works. Top water plugs are always fun (seeing the fish hit a lure on the surface is a rush) but take a little time to learn how to fish correctly.

I think FACTSOFLIFE likes fishing. I remember a pic of him with a big fish. Really big.

For bass, I have always had good luck with the standard Jig 'n Pig. I also started playing with tubes lately. They really do work in about any situation. I even use them in drop shot rigs during the mid afternoon.
Around here(SW VA), we don't break out our Spinners until we break out our space heaters. Buzz baits work better in warmer water than Spinners.

Back to catfishing though, I've already tried even heavy duty surf gear and I still can't cast a 2 lb bait very far, or atlease far enough to keep it out of my boats noise range. I might try and build a custom heavy duty rod. Anyone know where I can pick up some blanks and guides that can take 20+ oz rigs and 50-80 lb line? Thanks

Tuna fishing is alot of fun. I'll agree to that. But I live 200 miles from the coast and can't really get out there every weekend to do some offshore stuff. I wish I could tho.:)

That would be one hell of a rod. I don't think they make rods like that for casting. I can throw about a pound of tackel at least 25 yards with my surf gear (now that I think about it, it's got to be further than that). That's a 12 foot rod and a very smooth flow spinning reel. That should be outside your boats sound range but I'm not sure you could make that sort of cast from a boat. I have at least 6 or so feet (sometimes more) of line out on the ground to make a really long cast.

edit: That's with 30lb test. 80lb test would not come off the reel very nicely and would add a lot of weight/resistanse so you'd get a shorter cast.

I might have a setup put together actually that could take it. An eight foor Shakespeare Sturdy stick, a Penn 113 Senator w/ bait clicker, spooled with about 500 yrds of Spidrline big water braid 200 lb test. I've been casting with it all morning up and down my drive way with a rubber weight(about 20oz) and it does pretty well. I'll try it on the tennesse next week and see how it does against some big blues.

BTW, I've never had good results with spinning gear when going for cats. Nine times out of ten, the drag isn't strong enough to hold on when a cat runs down river from us. But thanks anyway.

I bass and musky fish. Sometimes walleye and panfishing too... depending. Walleyes aren't too hot around here, ussually. But I love bass fishing.

Walleye. Thats something I haven't tried yet. Mayby it's because I live in the south, or mayby because I just can't sit there and play with live bait for two hours. I do want to try it tho.

I just ripped some lipps this morning in under an hour. I caught a 19.5 inch rainbow trout with about a 12.5 inch girth. That makes it over 3.5 lbs. Caught him on streamer fly, a maribu muddler minnow that was white. Might not sound big but for the stream I grew up on it's big for me. Been seriously persuing fly fishing for about 3 yrs now. About to dive into the tyeing end of it too. I've fly fished the Big Horn in December when the "spawn" is on and have been crisened with the nickname. Spawnboy. Not like I've just taken up fishing tho, I grew up on it. Dad has taken me to Canada to fish northern pike. I have one mounted that's about 20lbs. Caught a 10lb carp once when I was young. Guess you could say it's in my blood.

Spawn on!

python, if you're looking for some serious cat tackle, go look at http://www.reedssports.com those guys have some serious gear for muskies that can handle large livebait and sinker setups. Bass Pro and Cabelas have some stuff as well. Look for a rod made of E-Glass. Stay away from graphites and pure glass rods. E-Glass is the toughest rod material out there. I think bass pro actually has a rod line up made for cats.

I went and grabbed my bass pro catalog, they have a cat rod lineup in it. Go to www.basspro.com and input these catalog numbers:
Casting:
15-111-606-00
15-111-611-00
15-111-622-00
spinning:
15-111-618-00
15-111-620-00

all of those rods are line rated at 12-30 or 20-40. The spinning rods are rated at 6 ounces for bait weights. They'll throw a LOT more than that.

Actually, I already picked one of those up. I got a casting combo about two months ago to get started in Catfishing and while it is strong, and definitely enough for even the most powerful cats, it's still not strong enough. It's a great rod for channels and blues tho. But I'm going after big ole flatheads. I think my combo that I built up above should do the trick. Thanks tho.

I just got back from Alaska where my dad and I caught about 40 8-10 lbs sockeye salmon on flyrods. Not to mention the rainbows, grayling, dolly varden, and occasional king salmon. :D
