View Full Version : Tech Conference Dinner?

All,

As the guy who instigated the last tech conference I thought I'd try a similar ploy. I'll be spending the Sunday night before the conference in town (hopefully at the Hotel) and am wondering who else will be around.

Maybe we can set up dinner somewhere and talk Tom, the techs, and AO biggys to show up so we can meet, greet, eat, and swap stories.

I signed up for tech conference so will be definitely attending (unlike what happened during the last tech conference I couldn't attend at the last minute) and would like to rally everyone who'll be hanging out Sunday evening.

Please post to this thread if interested. Mods would you consider making this sticky?

I will not be in Cranberry Sunday night, but seeing as I only live 30 mins away I am up for dinner. If you guys want we can even head into the city. It's only about 20 mins away, but for some reason most people who come to the IAO never have any idea what the city looks like:) I can fit 5 people in my car (including myself) so I can even drive some people.

I've got a room booked at the Sheraton Hotel for Sunday night.

Let's start the basics for the plan. I'll try to look into interesting places to have the get-together. Right now we should plan to meet in the hotel lobby at 6pm if you're staying in the hotel. Once we decide on where to go I'll post that as well - so that people staying off-site can meet us there.

I'll also start a list of confirmed attendees as far as the VIPs go. List is going to start out with AGD :)

Jason, Could you possibly suggest places to go out to dinner?

hmmmm. I'm not able to attend the tech conference but might be able to meet with everyone. I live right by the Pittsburgh International airport (about 30-40 minutes). I can also drive/carpool if necessary.

Edit: Hey Muzikman how about Station Square - lots of different resturants, views of the river, Heinz field, etc and easy to get to.

I was thinking about Station Square as a good place (As was ROCP). The one thing I was trying to think of was good Pittsburgh place to eat, and Station Square does not have any. They have Hooters, Philthy McNasty's, Hard Rock Cafe, Hullihans, An Italian Place (the names alludes me right now), The Cheese Cellar, The Grand Concourse and Gandy Dancer (But those are two places Paintball should avoid:)). I think that is about it. I was thinking a great place to eat in Pittsburgh if you have never been there is Primanti Brothers. They are the local Mecca for after bar 2am eant'. They are home to Pittsburgh most famous sandwich. But to enjoy you usually have to have a few beers in ya.:) So, on that note, my vote is for Station Square, eat at Philthy McNasty's (damn Canadians are taking over da 'burgh) or the Cheese Cellar and then I'll treat everyone to a ride to the top of Mt. Washington on the Incline (make sure to bring your cameras:)). And for anyone 21 or over, we can even hit the South Side afterwards. But anyway...I say we vote...below is a list of my favorite eating spots in the 'burgh and a link to their web site (if they have one). Remember, these are not in any order and some might not be in the nicest parts of town:)

1. Any of the places mentioned above (at Station Square)

2. Primanti Brothers (4 City locations) http://www.primantibros.com/

3. Penn Brewery http://www.pennbrew.com/

4. Max's Allegheny Tavern http://www.maxsalleghenytavern.com/

5. The 'O' (The Original Hotdog) - No website found, but a great dog shop.

6. Vincent’s Pizza - No website found, but you haven’t had a pizza until you have had a Vinni Pie. Please if anyone has health problems and will die from large intakes on grease, oil, and golf ball sized toppings, please let me know and I will remove this from the list.:)

Those are some of my favorite eating spots and places to take out of town friends. Again, some of these are out of the way and not as cool of a location as Station Square, but they are an experience in and of them selves.

Jason,

Which one of the places you suggested would have enough space to comfortable seat us all? The last one of these I attended was at the 2000 Pevs big sale - Tom, Red, Bob Long, and Pev all joined us for dinner at Hooters. The cool thing about Hooters (aside from the servers) was that they had a whole section that was "counter" or bar like, but wasn't the bar section. This worked well as it allowed for mingling among the VIPs and none were monopolized by just the few sitting close to them - while the other guests were shut out of the conversations. Any of the places you mentioned friendly to this type of "mingling?"

I'm game for anything! I just want to mingle and hang out with everyone. :) :) Just let me know the time/place to meet and I'm there. We should pick a central location to meet so we can work out who rides with who in case there are lots of us.

07-17-2002, 09:08 AM
We'll put you on the "VIP" list of attendees for the dinner. I think Jason is planning some activities for earlier in the day.

Jason,

Where is the rally point for early afternoon events going to be? I suggest we keep the dinner rally point at the hotel since there is plenty of parking and will allow us to jockey cars.

Well, Philthy McNasty is basically a sports bar and they have LOTS of tables that can be pushed together. Since it is also a bar people can mingle all they want. If we just want to hang out and talk we can eat dinner then head out side and hang out at the new section of Station Square which will be opening July 26. It's out side, but it looks cool so far and there is a lot of room and looks like quite a few places to sit. We could also take over one of the observation decks on MT Washington (again, outside). Depending how many people we have we might want to call and arrange for a larger party ahead of time. Let me look around and see if any of the places in Station Square will give us an entire section to ourselves. In the mean time, lets compile a list of everyone that wants to come.

I have no real plans for anything Sunday afternoon, but if anyone wants to do something, let me know I am available. There is a lot to see in Pittsburgh and I'm a pretty good tour guide:)

SprayingMango, do you know, is the open play for non-tourney players only or can the rest of us waste our tourney paint money there too? I hate playing in a tourney without having played for more than a week (I feel all out of sorts) and probably won't be able to practice that weekend.

Mango
07-18-2002, 04:19 PM
I think it's open to anyone. The lady on the phone just said that open play would be availible behind the food vendors. My last post is confuseing I know, what I meant was that for those not lucky enough to have a team to compete, there will be a place to play.

Bigzamboni
07-18-2002, 07:53 PM
I want to play in the young guns tournament, but finding decent players in the 10-14(really like 12-14 to be competitive)age range that can get to IAO isn't very easy.

Also, being at the age where you are now just legally able to get a job(but not many will hire until around 16) and not having sponsors also makes it difficult to foot the bill entry and paint.

Alas, if I can't find a team to play on or at least be an alternate for, I don't think I will be going. :(

Well, I live right by the airport. I could pick anybody there and take them to Station Square (including gear - I have a CRV.),or meet up with them and carpool.

Not a problem, I told them 20 - 25 people. We might even get our own room. They are going to call me back about that, but there seems to be plenty of space.

Ok, here is the skinny on what is planned for Sunday. This falls right in line with what I posted before, but as of yesterday we actually have reservations for 20-25 people. Since I have not seen any objections (except for my original meeting time) I assume everyone listed is still a go. There appears to be more than enough people that can drive to get us all down and back safely (or at least just down and back:)). I will have printed directions on getting there, but I am still working on the best way. I don't know how many people here drove in Pittsburgh, but on a normal year it is a pain in the butt, well this year they decided to close a lot of the main roads in town, so please, do not go by the Yahoo (or similar) directions). I just checked yesterday and they way they take you will make you drive into a pit since the road is not there right now:). For anyone under 21, do not worry, this is a restaurant / bar (sports bar) and I asked about under 21 guests and they said no problem as long as there is someone over 21 there.

For anyone who needs picked up from the airport, I will be more than happy to do it, I think ROCP15126 is also willing to pick people up.

So...onto the good stuff...

I am looking for a ride from the airport at 5:55 . this will freeup tom for other things in the day. My flight # is nw 1111 from detroit..

Taking any offers..

Muzikman
07-30-2002, 04:17 PM
5:55?? Does this flight keep getting later and later?:) I would be willing to do it, but getting back to the hotel before dinner would be a pain...We'll work something out. I know Steve (BlackVCG) was looking for a ride from the airport, but he is getting in at like 1:30 or something. You know, you guys could take an airport shuttle:) You know what? You could take an airport shuttle to the Sheraton in Station Square and meet us there, then someone could drive you back up to cranberry afterwards:)

Rocp15126

I can pick up Kayle at the airport and head up to cranberry to meet everyone. If BlackVCG cannot get a ride, I can accommodate him. Let me know.

My dad will also be tagging along(:p )with me, unless this is just for AO members. He was the partially bald guy who was cooking burgers at the end of NJ AO day II for anyone that remembers, I think that deserves a spot. :)

I'm gonna try to make it up. I'm in the south hills of pittsburgh (near century 3 mall, for locals). Let me know if there's still a significant demand for carpooling, I have a 99 cougar (me + 3). It'd be out of my way, since I'm coming UP to the city and you all are coming DOWN, but for an AOer in need, I'll do my best. Either way, I've been wanting to try Philthy's anyway. ALSO, I cannot stress enough, if we are going up the incline to Mt. Washington, BRING YOUR CAMERAS!!! That street is actually called grandview avenue, and it lives up to the name. Pittsburgh at night from the Grandview lookouts is quite a breathtaking sight. Any one who needs ANYTHING relating to the city, PM me, I'm glad to help. Also, muzik, what will the private room be reserved under? Hope to see everyone there!

The reservations are under Jason Beam. We are not in the private room (Canadian Room) because we did not have enough people. Although we are growing now. I might call Philty's tonight or tomorrow (depends on when I get back in town) and see if we can be moved to the Canadian Room, but right now we are being setup in part of the main dining area.

Guys, this dinner is in Cranberry right? If its downtown I am unlikely to make it due to tech conference setup issues.

I thought I had warned everyone about that but a review of the posts shows I didn't. I am very behind in getting things setup for the tech conference and now I find out Kayle still needs a ride. I can't commit to a dinner downtown on sunday night. If you switch it to Cranberry I can make it but might have to leave right after. We will have access to the room the night before so we might be able to hang out there and talk if I get things organized.

hmmm.....will khaki's cut it? um... packing emergency, will khaki's work or do I have to go buy a dress, lol

I'd also suggest(if my vote matters) that we switch to cranberry because as far as I would assume, AGD is the only one who it would matter to as far being able to make it(unless anyone where helping him directly in which case it they would now be able to go aswell.):)

Hmm...First off, the dress issue was a joke:)

I thought Kayle was getting a ride from Rocp15126, if he is not, since I am picking up BlackVCG at 4:30, we can hang around and wait for Kayle. Someone give me a call and let me know (412-401-8650).

We could move dinner to Creanberry, not sure where right at this minute, but I will think of something. Is the 7-7:30pm meet time still good?

Well, I did a little searching....try www.cranberrytownship.com/dining.htm

It appears that there is a Dingbats, Bob Evans and a chinese food place just up the road from the Sheraton. I know there is got to be more restaurants along that strip.

I'll keep looking. I'll pick up Kayle at the airport and head up to Cranberry by 7ish.

I know no one is probably going to see this, but I'll toss it out here any way. I was looking and there is a Max and Ermas right down from the Hotel. I also know there is a Lone Star, but they are never able to sit large groups together. We could always take over the Krispy Kremes:) Not to shoot down any ideas, but I can't eat Chineese. There is a Monte Chellos (sp?) down the road, but if 25 really show up then some of us would be eating on the sidewalk as it is not a very big place. There is also a full service bar/restaurant in the Sheraton. I never ate there so I do not know how large it is. So, to list the options...

Dingbats - Never ate at the one in Cranberry, but in general it's not a bad place. Sorta a TGI Fridays style.

Chineese - Please don't do it to me....

Max & Ermas - Again, never ate at the one in Cranberry, but it's your typical family bar/restaurant. They might be able to setup for 25 people.

Lone Star - Eat there every year for the IAO. They can not setup for large groups because of their booth layout, but it's always good food.

Monte Chellos - Your typical Italian Pizza style place.

Sheraton - It seems the only place that will be open in the Sheraton is the Sports Bar. Again, never been in an of these places, but it could be an option.

For a complete list I just found, check out...

Well, they all sound good to me. (And I've eaten at all of them in Robinson twp.) IMHO it doesn't matter if we all don't sit at the same table. I'm sure everybody will be able to talk either at dinner, before, or after if we help TK set up.

Your probably picking up BlackVCG from the airport as I type ......
