I just finished finalizing my next order with my local store (Paintball and More in Euless, Texas...simply the best store around [817.282.3636]) and the proprietor told me of the new Dye barrels that have interchangeable backs so that you can change the ID of your barrel by replacing only the back.

Anyone else know about this? The Dye website is silent.

Pricing is supposedly the same as before. This will just be the new Boomstick.

JT is doing it too. The JT backs are around $40 a piece I think. IMO it's better than the freak, the freak's inserts are to thin and would be more suseptable(sp) to swelling.

I asked my local shop about the DYE backs too.
PaintBall Inc. They told me that they wouldn't stock the backs seperately, but could order ( $$$ ) anything that I wanted. His insider tip was the DYE was making a package soon that would include a back and Multiple Length Fronts. ( WTF ) but that is just rumor at this point.

hyppocrates yes....but int hins industry every one is arent they? i mean come on, people sttod by for years that cockers dont need to go electro, yet its all the rage now right? and stuff like that, dye blows in my hwhole opinion, why spend 100 bux for a barrel when you can get 2 cp's for that price? and cp barrels are one of the top industry barrels!

Hyppocrates ?

Actually I was told that the decision centered around the Custom Annoers and Assembly problems. so they said screw it, we'll make um screw together and stop worrying about who tries to assemble the parts. ( Imagine it if DYE would allow ANYONE other than themselves to put the parts together )

The reason Dye said that interchangeable barrels stink is because you can't get a perfectly straight barrel with threading like that. Old Dye barrels (an newer ones too i think) used a glue press type construction, making the barrel truely straight. Threading two sections however cannot ensure this. Why are they making them now? To make money. They're a competitive company trying to grow, not surprising.

Also at EMR's holy grail someone was showcasing all titanium 2 peice barrels that screwed the back into the front rather than the front into the back, which reduces the problems. Maybe it was the other way around.. well.. it was the opposite of the freak.

Personally I don't like the freak because of quality control issues and my wallets lack of padding. Out of 10 inserts 8 were not what they were labeled. That's sad.

umm theres only 8 inserts total
also whats the prob if its labeled wrong i mean your not measuring the paint i just do a blow test and fit it that way

Paintball Online has these 2002 Boomsticks for $140. They are charging $120 for the non-2002 Boomsticks.

10 random inserts, not just a set.

I know the blowgun thing, but again the wallet issue comes to play.

ah yes...the wallet issue...i'm sure it will be more of an issue to try to get a variety of bores with this dye system...but i guess we'll see.

are you talking used inserts? becuase sometimes the paint gets scratched off and it might scratch of the # if you put it in a bad spot

EDIT: based on that pic its the same as the freak when you screw it in

Actually, it's entirely different than the freak. It's the entire back, not an insert. This means that it will be quite a bit more expensive, but cheaper than buying complete Boomsticks now. I envision buying a 12" .692 and a 10" .688 and having four different barrels. Perhaps I would buy a .684 back at some point, but probably not.

ask any freak user how many and what sizes of inserts they use on a regular basis, and you've pretty much got your answer of what ID size of backs you'd need. And, with no worries about crushing a small aluminum insert (not that anyone has, right :D)
