Anyone white tail deer hunt?

Anyone here deer hunt? What kind of rifle do you use? Right now, Ive got it down to a Browning 270 A-bolt short, and a Thompson encore with either a 270 or possibly a 300. My stepdad, whom i live with, has a Thompson Encore Muzzle loader, and its beautiful gun. Im just not sure if Id like a single shot, or a bolt action with clip.(Yeah, its more of a possibility for me to miss the first time.)

Which would you use, or which other gun would you reccomend.

I know guys back home (in Manitoba where we go in the fall to hunt) who use .22 !! Sometimes, it's all you need.

Personally, I use a .303 British, my father in law uses a .308 and uncle uses a 7mm... It's all personal preference I guess, they all get the job done

Oh yeah, and remember, the real work starts when you pull the trigger ;)

Last year I hunted with a Remington 700BDL in 7mm Rem. Ultra Mag and my brother with a 700 that he rechambered in .300WSM. Enjoyed both but am getting a 700 in .308 this weekend. Like that you can get surplus ammo pretty cheap and it doesn't kill your body to put an afternoons worth of rounds through it.

bowhunting, I use a Mathews UltraMax at 65pounds, for gun season I have two primary weapons. My 25-06 when I head north and my Austin and Halleck 320. Both are supremely accurate and both put deer down in their tracks.

the 25-06 especially is a serious deer stopper. I've shot deer past 275 with it and only one has gone more than 25 yards after the shot.

I do like the Thompson for it's versatility and would seriously consider one. The muzzleloader is very accurate.

I used to hunt deer - in S. GA there isn't much need for a long range rifle, most the places to hunt are deep woods. I shot a 30-30, worked great and was lightweight and inexpensive. I've hunted in LA and needed a much more powerful rifle to cover the longer distances.

I do not huint deer, but i do *do* alot of shooting. My grandfather swears by the .270 for deer. its all hes ever used and hadnt had any problems with take down power. If i was going to hunt deer i, myself would use my .30-.06.

I use my .454 Casull hand cannon :) 300 grains of deer-pummeling hollow-point arnold-stopping knock-me-on-my-bottom power is probably enough to drop them pretty quick.... granted i have to deal with wasting disease this year, which may kill my hunt altogether. Sure it's not as elegant and pinpoint as my .243, but I'm sure does the job just as well.

Now if I could only SEE a deer when I have it with me. I'd be in the clear. :)

Jesus - I hope your not talking about just a rimfire .22! You need to be real close and get a brain shot to kill a deer with a .22! Now there are many high powers that are .22 caliber like a .223 - who have enough zip and unf to drop a deer.

A .270 would be a great deer gun - so would a .300 mag. I havent dear hunted - but my dad has with everything from a .223, to a .357, to a .30-06 - iron sights to scope.

My kid Caleb does and I plan to do a little this year. He has a Remington 700 in .270 cal and I have a Browning A Bolt with BOSS and Leupold scope in .243 cal.

in ohio can only use shotgun. got this one 2 years ago using 12ga. shooting sabots.

Really - .22 ....I've seen guys at about 150-200yds get deer with a.22

I thought .22 calibers were illegal to use in most states when hunting for deer.

Anyways I quit hunting about 3 years ago but I still own my rifle.

It is a WInchester model 70 all black 270 caliber bolt action rifle with steel sights (I hate using a scope)

actually, i believe its illegal in all states to use rimfire bullets, but i might be wrong. and the only .22 that i know of that you can hunt with is the .22 Hornet, which is a centerfire version of the .22.

Anyway, i use a 12 gauge for dog hunting, and a single shot 30-30 for still hunting.

22-250, .220 swift's are two that would come to mind as being marginal deer calibers. You'd have to have a very high quality bonded bullet like a Swift A-Frame or something of that nature. Even then you just aren't packing enough kinetic energy and more importantly retained energy at any kind of distance. 90 grains is pretty much the upper limit of bulet weights in that caliber. Just isn't enough lead there. Heck, I still think I'm pushing it with a Sierra Game King at 115 grains in my 25-06. But so far it's killed every one with the exception of one that went 25 yards, stone dead in it's tracks at pretty good distances.(225yards+) And up close, it ain't even a contest, trigger gets pulled, deer gets dead.

They have a .22LR with a 60gr bullet that penetraits like 24" at 200m into ballistic gelatin.

i think cabelas sells them.

but thats gotta be near impossible to take out a deer with a .22LR
