Is it absolutely required to have a adjustable tank w/ a retro valve, or will a preset work just as well? Any cons to using a preset w/ it? Thanks guys (& gals!}

I use mine on a preset high pressure crossfire. seems to work ok although it's not terribly consistent (+/-10 on a good day.) People with better consistency luck all seem to be using adjustables (flatlines in particular)

A fixed output tank works great. You just can't fine tune the reactivity of the trigger.

I have fixed output. Works fine. No major velocity fluctuations. Eventually I'll get the flatline....

If you get a fixed output make sure you get one with a high fixed output (crossfire or PMI has them). Some of the Bulldog ones are set for 450. Don't know but it would probably not be enough to make the retro very reactive.

I've already got a fixed, ~850..., just wondering if I'll need to spend all my $$ on a retro & new tank (or reg if I can find one).

Shouldn't have to. I have a preset one at 800-850 (not sure which) and it works great. Trigger is really crisp and I like its feel. Probably need to go adjustable to fine tune the reactiveness of the retrovalve but for now I'm very happy with my setup.
