Home-made :D

Best way to do it, IMO.

Desktop, mid-tower.

I run a homemade computer too...saved a crap-load by doing so.

BLARG!! I REFUSE, to ever buy a Dell. Or a gateway, or any other mass-produced piece of crap like that. If I'm not building it, then I'll buy it from Alien.

Yeah except that alien systems are like $1000 more then you would spend to build the machine yourself. Wow you dont get a cool case. Who cares? Thats what case mods are for.

True, but from what I hear, they're well worth it.

I bought all the same parts that are in an alien and even upgraded the harddrive/memory/vid and saved about $1200 :p

Other four machines are custom built. Easier to upgrade and I know what quality parts go into it.

NO! ;)

actually, sam needs another system or two, just to round things out ;)

2 'real' workstations, 1 file server/web server, 1 db server and a box for the girlfriend to use (do you have any idea how tough it is to convince someone who isn't a techie that, yes, i really am fully using these 4 machines at once, and no, you can't hop on for a second) :p

those are the ones that are plugged in at the moment, i have a few rackmount cases on the way, so hopefully i can turn this massive pile of off white plastic cases into something more managable

Now THAT'S what I am talking about! :D A man who understands. :)

And about using using the other machines... I know the feeling.

Dad - "Don't use that computer until I tell you it is okay."
Family Member - "But you are not using it."
Dad - "Yes, I am."
Family Member - "But you are sitting over on the other side of the room on THAT computer."
Dad - "Trust me, they are all being used right now."
Family Member - "Huh?!?"

Of course now it is a given.... don't ask why.. just don't use it! LOL :D:D:D

Yeah...because the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 that Dell and Gateway use is far inferior to Alien or home-builts. Total crap I tell you.

Anyone who says buying a Dell is cheaper than building it yourself obviously doesn't know much about building it themselves :)

I built my PIII 800 at the time when it was top of the line for $450.

But anyway, my house has my PIII 800 desktop (built by me), a P4 1.7 desktop(custom computer shop, got a great deal), an Celeron 300 desktop (HP, from years back), and an old HP PII Vectra, I'm not even sure on the speed. Maybe 200, tops.

I had an ancient PI Compaq laptop, but we threw it out.

I completely agree! I never said it was cheaper. I was just ticked that people say they are crap. When really there are a lot of the EXACT same components. I have never owned a Dell or Gateway. I don't have that kind of money. I have built PCs. No probs there, but my latest computer....was from YeeHa-Mall or something like that. :D

PIII 866
128 Ram
20GB HD
On board lan, sound, video
52x cdrom
floppy, keyboard, mouse, speakers

All for $327...back in april. Now, that is the way I had to go. I would have wanted to go crazy if I built it myself. The only thing I've done with this computer is put the HD from my old one in it and buy a $30 ATI Radeon.

It sucks not having a ton of money and having Tech/Gadgets and Paintball as hobbies. :(

Alienware OVERCLOCKS their videocards, so they do have BETTER performance than a company like dell or gateway.
