Just wondering......an autococker is called a autococker 'cause it recocks automatically after every shot, and a bushmaster is a bushmaster 'cause it sounds cool. So what is an automag-is there some hidden meaning, or does it mean something technical, or what?

It comes from a real handgun, called an automag. Tom got the inspiration from it. We now shorten it to Mag.

Here is what Tom posted…

Dave,

Yes you are quite right, the original real gun was the insperation for the name of our gun. It was not the insperation for the design as we named it after we finished it. The original name during development was P3 for "Panther 3". The Panther was our first gun, there was a second blow back prototype named P2 then the proto that lead to the Mag.

Oh... and welcome to AO.

LOL Clever. ;)

But keep in mind that this person is new and wanted the CORRECT answer. ;) And according to Tom himself, it was named after the Automag Handgun, not an acronym. :D

I just don't want to confuse the guy. I would not have even bothered posting this, but your post might be taken as truth…. LOL

Here's a pic of a .44 Automag :)

They do have strikin similarities. Note the Grip Frame/Trigger and it's position on the barrel/Hammer assembly :D

Maybe because it is an Automatic and shoots Magnums? All a Magnum is is any round that uses more than the standard load. So without actually doing the research, I would guess that the .44 Automag was named because it was an automatic that was designed specifically to shoot the .44 Magnum rounds?

But I could be wrong….. Like I said, I have not done the research on that particular firearm…… ;)

that's really a .44? it looks a bit weak to handle such a large round. the desert eagle is a massive gun built specifically to handle powerfully loaded pistol rounds(.357 magnum, .50 AE, etc.). it surprises me that a weapon so much smaller-looking can handle a similiarly powerful round

Wow, the 68 Automag and the .44 Automag have a startling resemblance.

.. No wonder :p

...was a .44 cal, semi-automatic handgun. The picture posted is correct - that is what the gun looked like. They are rare and very much a collector's item now. It actually used proprietary cartridge called the .44 Automag or .44 AMP - a rimless cartridge slightly larger in diameter then a regular .44 mag.

AMT also made a pistol called the Automag - but the quality was nowhere near the same as the originals. The original Automag (the one in the picture) was the same model in the Dirty Harry movie.
