New Forum Rule about Sig IMAGES!!!

Ok, its gotten out of hand. Now even I am tired of scrolling past them. The new rule is that you are only allowed 15k of sig pics COMBINED. The pic must be wider than it is tall. If everyone gets with this program it will make things easier and all of us.

I have my cp set to ignore signatures for this very reason. They were out of hand a long time ago; hopefully this will bring things back down to a reasonable level.

Okay smarty pants. Tom made the rule at 15k and I come in at 16k. Hypocrisy? Not likely. I will trim it down.. but you had better get to work figuring out EVERYONE else’s signature image totals now too…. big guy.

Want to point out a slight oversight with me, fine… but don’t pull this "hypocrisy" crap. Specially since I have helped a good many folks both GET signature images and reduce the size of theirs…. As well as been one of the folks who has been pushing smaller image sizes.

No problem. But you know you don’t have to go to the user CP to do that right? You keep signatures on in the User CP as default, but then when you make your post you can choose to turn it off there. That is what I do. Leave it for the first post in a thread, and then (when I remember, which is most of the time) I just click the signature off for additional posts.

It is in the OPTIONS box directly below the YOUR REPLY box. It is the last choice there. :)

If you have just part of an image your looking for just CROP it in photoshop or any type of photo editing program, and if you cant I'm sure someone will help you out and crop the image to fit specs and still get the main part your looking for.

I try to keep mine as small as possible. By setting the colors low and removing unnecessary pixels.

I also agree with Havoc, try to only use your signature at least once per page per thread. *cough* spongebobsquarepants *cough* hehe :D ;)

Even when I'm on a dialup the thing that gets me isn't so much the download size but the length of the sigs.

shartley does a great thing putting text to the side of his pic which helps to keep his sig short.

Wouldn't it make more sense to restrict Pixel hight than say that they need to be wider than they are long? That means that a small 20x30 pixel icon is technicaly a violation of forum rules.

Maybe 150-200 Pixel hight limit might work better.

Oh, I agree about the height thing, I just think it's something that should be used with a bit of common sense. I feel mine isn't a huge image, and he's somewhat close to being as wide as he is tall, so I don't see it as being that big of a deal. I mean, file size wise it's smaller than 15k to begin with. I think the "wider than tall thing" really is aimed more toward sig images that are super tall, or the sigs that have four or five things in them IMHO. Hopefully, nobody minds his size.

If you don't otherwise know the size of the images you are using (you should, since you are using them) - on a windows platform, you can just do a right-mouse-click and select properties on each image.

Good point Bill. I think the new "rule" should just make people more aware of the sizes of their signatures. But I know some people can get picky about it. Tom should probably clarify it a bit more though.

Yes, and of course my post was made mainly to generate a laugh.

There's a reason the NPPL rules have a clause that mentions the spirit of the rules and gives the ultimate judge discretion in enforcement. Rules themselves usually aren't perfect.

As for me, I'd probably have a simple rule like "don't make an obnoxious sig" but a lot of people would just complain that was too vague.

And Manike's got to keep that sig - it makes me grin every time I see that 5 axis milled Manike-E-Mag body :-)

I do want to say this though. If someone has several images and they go over the limit combined they will be trimmed by one or the other of them. That is my understanding of the rule. So keep those secondary things small if you can. Just had to remove one for that reason.

Hmm just one image... Lots of people will have to choose between their signature image or a fan club image. Fan club image or a wang force image. Wang force image or Black Cell image. Black Cell image or AOD 2 image. And so one. You get the point.


Maybe the rule should be: The total size of all images side by side can be no longer then 500 pixels and have a height of no more then 150 pixels.


Otherwise, why not just use avatars?


EDIT: Of course, you could just combine all the images into ONE image. But not everyone has the talent to do that. =\

You would be amazed how easy it is to find out information about a user. IP addresses are easy to come by, from there you can get a host name. as for an OS and Browser? Well lots of sites out there pick up on that all the time. The fact that it only shows you your information isn't something to worry about. If someone wants that kind of information they are going to get it weither you want them too or not.

That being said. Chris that's a pretty cool trick.
