View Full Version : New Slug body designs from Deadlywind

nicad

An associate of mine and I have been putting together some body designs for the slug. He and I are doing all the designing and I will be doing the machining (CNC 4axis). Here is a shot of one of the concepts.

We plan on making limited runs of each type, so they will be unique and retain their value. We will also be working up designs for the newer style Slugs once thay are available.

comments/feedback is welcome.

That looks frickin awesome!!!!!! whats the estimated price on one of those? and will you make any old school RT compatible ones?

Looks pretty good, I would like to see an actual body first... a lot of designs have been popping up lately!

I should be having some pics of a run on a 1.5" round bar stock aluminum soon. (dont have enough Slug bodys to do test runs on).

price: nothing set yet.. but expecting it to be in the $200 neighborhood for raw, slightly more for single color.

For the $200 they will be coming with a feed tube and detent? :)

Im guessing its angel feed tubes and cocker detents?

sweet design, one thing though. Have the front tapered more.
Attatched is a pic showing what I mean.

(i dont have Photoshop)

not sure yet on what all will be included. most likely will leave that up to the buyer..
they will be threaded for cocker barrels, angel feed necks, and most likely angel ball detents.

is there a way to mill the sluggo a certain way so it would fit a classic?

very nice design! i really like what you came up with!

It does fit a classic.

yep...all sluggos fit classics

That's a really nice design. The drop off right after the feed should be a bit rouder. (actually, I'm not sure about that, it looks like a sharp angle but it might not be)

Creative Mayhem
02-04-2003, 06:47 AM
I like it...:D

BUT, are you sure you have enough "meat" at the valve end? IMO, it looks to be a little thin in your picture.

I agree with Cryer, taper the front some more if you can.

nicad
02-04-2003, 06:35 PM
ok well the 1.5"aluminum for test runs is on backorder. :-/
soo Iv been cooking up a few new designs in the mean time..

nicad
02-04-2003, 06:37 PM
..and as suggested, more removed off the front! :)
my personal favorite so far..

when are you going to make some with the new style slugs?

ill be a deffinate buyer if you get it over the valve and cool looking

MicroB

Will want the first ripper body that covers the valve.

All the designs are outstanding keep'em com'in

nice nice want to see some real pics just like everyone else.

PzYcO
02-04-2003, 09:47 PM
Hey...when you make these can you make them like in different feeds? like possibly a left warped? ^_^

nicad
02-04-2003, 11:07 PM
sorry cant make any structural changes to the slug body.. so whatever is offered in the slug, thats what will be available.

Im doing a rough milling of that last "ripper" design right now in a block of wood (see above post- the aluminum stock will be on its way). if all goes well and nothing crashes :) ill have some pics of it up.

word is that the new slugs (valve covering) will be out in a matter of weeks. as soon as i get my hands on the datasheet for it, ill start working up some designs for those. I personally prefer the valve cover look myself. :)

out!

Cryer
02-04-2003, 11:11 PM
Do a "ripper"!
I've always heard (there were like 3 different threads) that people want to see a mag in the style of a ripper Intimidator...

mag-hatter
02-04-2003, 11:12 PM
hmmm i would absoultely buy a sluggo if it had a job like this!

im not saying exactly like that, but you get the point...

man wood is nasty.. but is sure is fast and cheap! :)
the surface does not show off verywell in these, but you can get an idea.

Both the last CGI you posted and the wood sample look great. I can't wait until these get out.

Do you guys do this for a living? Have you milled other markers?

BTAutoMag

thats nice. the ULE's should come like that.

Blennidae

Nicad: Very nice work.

I personally didn't care for the style in the 1st pic, but the style you did in the wood sample is very nice.

I think we all appreciate seeing it as a real object (even if only in wood) as opposed to only the digital design.

I am also one of the "cover the valve" fans, so I'm interested in what you come up with when that type sluggo is available.

JAM
02-05-2003, 02:43 PM
yeah, that looks sweet.

And it is really nice to see some physical models rather than just CAD.

nicad how much for the wood bodies?:D

nicad
02-06-2003, 02:21 AM
wood bodies! $5 get em while they are hot*! hehe

been a while since iv updated.. sorry. spent most of the day tuneing the mill and making some changes to it to hopefully allow for faster mill times.

im getting back on the software tomorrow and try to pump out a another design. so far the last design posted is the most popular.. ill see if I can come up with some variations of it or maybe a new spin on it.

Also I plan on having an aluminum sample done tomorrow (not a Slug, just a bar of aluminum).. but cant promise anything on that time.

to answer some questions, the $200-something range is planned to be raw bodies only, ready to be annodized. they WILL be threaded for a ball detent. I like the angel ball detent, since you can twist it from the back with an allen wrench, so that is prolly what they will be tapped for. any suggestions on this part?

*wood bodies exclude any interal anything. body sold is externally milled chunk of wood. :-D

How about a non ripper style body?

Little Matt
02-06-2003, 01:12 PM
I think it looks awsome. About how long before the go into production?

Later,

MicroB

I would like to have a detent on both sides(just for looks I like things to be uniform). I would also agree on the angel detent they look the best. I was also wondering if you could extend the milling onto the/a body rail to make it look that much better.

Thx, B

nicad
02-06-2003, 02:49 PM
production time.. good question. Iv been dedicating almost everyday to make these things a reality (from the designing, tweaking, toolpath output, to machine setup and roughing/finishing passes).. things are getting closser everyday. :)

integrated body rail milling.. good idea. however, the reason for the slug was to be compatible with (all?) mags.. if theres different rails, then thatll introduce many variables in setup. :-/
ill still look into it later tho..

02-06-2003, 03:19 PM
nicad, since i have already purchased a slug, would it be possible to send it to you to have it run through your milling process.....and if by chance you will.....what will you charge.............thanks

Not a fan of "ripper" milling, but looks like you're doing some great work.

nicad
02-07-2003, 12:05 AM
ok im running a test aluminum bar right now.. it might be a while.. :)

sure youcan send in your existing slug body.. whatever the price is set at, I guess just subtract $100 from it.

I wish I could afford one of these, they look sweet. :( But it's not gonna happen any time this decade. :(

that is decently nice but by doing that it looks kinda like some sort of adult toy:D  . keeping it straight and smooth in the front no ridges is a good idea.;)

What's wrong with adult toys? Imagine the looks you'd get with this and a carefully milled barrel...

"Um, I can't fit my valve in my body..."

:)

BTW - the body looks good!

strongboy2005
02-14-2003, 10:17 PM
that's awesome. if these hit it big i might buy another cheap mag off ebay and slap an x valve, intelliframe, and one of your bodies on it. great work!

Little Matt
02-14-2003, 10:24 PM
strongboy, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a body and a rail and then build it from there. Becuase your just gonna replace everything on that cheap mag you get off ebay anyway. So in the long run your speding 150-300 dollars that you shouldn't have spent in the first place.

just a thought.

Great looking design! Will you be able to continue the waves over the valve if the next set of sluggo's have the extra aluminum?

cledford
02-15-2003, 12:30 AM
I agree with Rob_AGD (he didn't post this in the thread - but we had a conversation about it last week at the shop) Go with cocker dentents. The Angels look good - but they are crap. If you use cocker threads you can then install the rebuildable dentents - which also allow you to "custom tweak" the spring tension on the ball bearing.

The Angels (using Angel detents) are WAY KNOWN for chopping when using a HALO-B due to the weak dentents. Don't sacrifice on function for looks.

Otherwise, great work - I'm looking forward to the bodies.

hey yall.. yep been a while.. sorry!

thanks for the support and comments.
iv been working on many little things every day making these a reality.
to touch on some questions- yes i do plan utilizing the "tail" section of the newer slugs once/if they come out.
Ill consider the cocker detents.. or possibly make it an option.
im not quiet ready to take pre-orders. im focusing right now perfecting some of the process.. ill most definatly let yall know when im ready to start doing some slug runs.
