Ok, so you have a picture....The background should be a solid color for this to work well. Remember that blurry edges don't usually work too well. Anyway, when you're done with your picture, and it's ready to go, like this:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/reids/DE.jpg

Go to Image, then Mode, and select Indexed color. Just click ok on the window that pops up. Then go to File, Export, Gif89a Export. A window will pop up. Use the eye dropper to sample all the colors you want to be transparent (they well be shown as grey in the picture). When you are happy with your selections, click ok, and save it (as a Compuserve Gif). That's how I do mine. It should now look like this:

I know, this one is a little messed up, but I only spent a minute on it...I hope it helps. Good luck.

EDIT: this is all in Photoshop.

I tried to make a transparent picture but I'm having trouble. When I go to File>Export, I only get Path to Illustrator. I'm using Photoshop 7.0. Did I miss something? I followed the first part correctly.

File | Save for Web...

Change settings to the appropriate scheme (I used GIF 64 Non-Dithered for this.

Eyedrop the backround, then click the first button under the color pallete on the left (Map current color to transparent) then save.

I deleted text and background with the magic wand, resized the image to 40% original (which is why it's a little pixelated) paint can filled the transparent space with a neytral grey, and then selected that as the transparent shade and exported. :D I suck....lol

HMMMMMM. Does anyone know how to do this is MSPaint, There is a tab that makes it tranparent but it never works. I already have the Image uploaded on here but I need to host it myself so it has .gif or .jpg at the end. Could someone tell me how to get it transparent in MSPaint or host it at there site transparent. It's the SpongeBob image in my sig.

*NOTE* I'm not lazy, I just don't have photoshop.
