THE X-COM DIMENSION: NARRATIVE

The X-Com Dimension

The Chronicler stares at CHEN, studying the latest records for perhaps the tenthtime. Mankind fought off an alien invasion? How was this possible?
"Tell me CHEN. What were the technological capacities of this X-COM unitduring the time of this invasion?"
CHEN responds: "Holographic images of rifles, grenades that couldbarely detonate a 10-square foot area, let alone the hundreds of miles that laterweapons were capable of. Energy weapons were but a myth at this time, until ..."
"Now show me the records of what these aliens fought with."
"... until this X-COM unit came across the alien designs for plasma weapons, nearlylimitless power sources and other things that, not 10 years in their past, wouldhave been considered impossible. The fact that the Earth obviously survived this attack and someone lived to tell the tale about it speaks volumes about the sheer willpower of mankind during this conflict."
"Show me all of it again, CHEN. Start from the beginning."

"Reports of alien abductions are on the rise. News sources from the entire planet report on the existence of ‘Unidentified Flying Objects’ and alien visitors. Gruesome photographs of mutilated livestock appear as often as pictures of wrecked transportation devices. The general populace of the world approaches hysteria and the governments of the world respond with a covert action plan.
"Funded by 14 of the planet's most wealthy nations, the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit - X-Com - comes into being on April 12, 2003. A consortium of the most- experiencedmilitary personnel, science specialists and engineering experts are gathered at secret, underground bases, comprising the Earth's first and last defense against the aliens."

Impossible, The Chronicler thought. Simply impossible! A report on this incident would have to be made very, very soon... He browses the data link one more time, committing to memory the few surviving personal logs from this most significant conflict:

Datalog:
03:31:45 April 12, 2003 - X-Com USA Hopewell, Virginia
File Name: 'UFO Crash Site 1'

"Command Log: Cmdr. Gerard Torwin
Lt. Ybarra has radioed in she has successfully downed the UFO on approach to New Yorkand has dropped a tracking beacon on the wreckage. We will be sending a dropship toinvestigate the crash site immediately."

Datalog:
11:01:33 April 12, 2003 - X-Com USA Hopewell, Virginia
File Name: 'Mission Log - UFO Crash Site 1'

"Operation Log: Col. Joseph C. McCormick IV
The Skyranger descends to the Virginia farmland. It’s a gorgeous, clear day, but unfortunately,we can't spot the small UFO on the way down. There is a two-story brick barn about 30 yards away to the left rear of our Skyranger exit. To the right of this, and directly to the rear of our Skyranger, is a small wooden stable. A low stone wall runs in front of both of these structures.
The ramp falls outward into the field and hits the soft earth with a dull thump. Silence greets our agents. A quiet landing?
Our tank rolls down the ramp, takes two plasma blasts in the right side and blows up in a ball of flame. Oops.”

“We react. Corporal Cook sprints out the exit, jumps off the right of the ramp and comes up facing a Sectoid 10 feet away! He opens fire on full auto: green plasma blasts race across the short interval but all of them miss the Sectoid and sail off into the distance! Note to self: Send Cpl Cook to firing range upon return. The Sectoid aims, pulls the trigger once, and drills Cook in the chestplate. Cook's vision blurs...but he stays up!

“Two men scan the exit area. There! Two more Sectoids! These are 50 yards away, behind the stone wall in front of a wooden shed. Cook and Hazen turn to open fire as two more men exit the Skyranger, set up and add their firepower to the barrage. Plasma blasts rip chunks out of the stone wall and punch gaping holes in the walls of the shed. Hazen's HE ammo sends wads of turf into the air, and decimates a corner of the shed. The two Sectoids scramble for cover, but before they make it, Hazen decapitates one of them and Travis blows off the leg of the other. The two fall almost side-by-side in front of the shed!
Nice shooting, men!

“Through the smoke, we can now make out the shape of the UFO. It lies just to the right of the shed."

Sectoids? Strange name, The Chronicler considers, coming to the same conclusion he madeseveral hours ago. He'd never heard of the species, or of the others mentioned in the reports: Floaters, Mutons ... even the supposed master race of Ethereals. All were mysteries.

Still he puzzled. How was this even possible? From all he has learned of thismoment in history, these alien species had far superior technology and an almost limitlessamount of resources. Was there some secret weapon his research had not yet uncovered? Thisentire battle must be studied. Thoroughly.

The Chronicler stands, preparing himself. The Council must be called immediately.

The Chronicler looks out toward the faces, rapt with attention, speaking slowly, not certain how they will accept this new information and develop an accurate replication of events from it. Aliens. The shaking of his head is barely perceptible to those closest to him.
As The Chronicler pauses, he senses the curiosity among the Council members and is once more reminded of the resiliency and creativity these beings possess. Yes, they have survived an alien invasion … somehow. If mankind can adapt to this new unknown element, he must understand how. The Leaderswill not permit failure on re-creating this conflict. It will have to be done.

"This battle must be re-created,” The Chronicler begins. “We must learn all we can about the methods mankind employedto battle this obviously superior enemy. What mistakes did their enemies make? And most importantly..." The Chronicler pauses, "… what and where is the weapon used to turn back the alien horde?"
