View Full Version : Barrel Porting and it's Use in Paintball

I am looking for a scientific resource that states what porting does for a paintball barrel. I am aware that the only real thing porting does is allow venting of air before the ball leaves the barrel thus quieting down the sound of the shot.

There are those who claim that porting does more for accuracy, although I know this not to be true.

I am looking for some sort of resource or thread that AGD might have done on this subject so that I have a basis for an argument with local salesmen and paintball players who believe otherwise.

I have searched this site from the tech forum to deep blue and have yet to find the definative resource on this subject.

Any help would be appreciated.

Um... you got it. All it does is quiet down the shot and use up more air.

That's it.

But is there any testing that was done by AGD? Is there any resource that 'proves' this .. ?

Have you read this?

Actually yes .. I have been looking and looking for anything that will 'prove' that porting does nothing but quite the shot .. but I can't seem to find anything specific ..

It get's me when I was in the paintball shop and I hear the sales man say "Oh yes, porting gives an air cusion" , or "yes yes, w/o porting, paintballs wouldn't be as accurate" .. but the only thing I can say is that's not true. I have nothing to back it up with.

check this out...(it's a discussion between a couple engineers about the physics of a paintball's movement, which includes info about porting..)

My head hurts :p...that was alot of info to digest. That being said it was very informative...thanks...I hope this info helps you out. I believe as you do that porting is useless and is just a sales pitch like a used car sales men would use :D
Keep up the good fight my man!

Ask them HOW it affects accuracy. BTW, spin has to exceed approx. 6k rpm to have any affect. For more than you ever wanted to know read this:
