No mag should be without one. ;)

Never mind the level 10 (LX) at this point. We first need to know where the paint is breaking.

In the barrel?
Then you need to get better/fresher paint, and/or paint that fits you barrel better.

In the breech?
Are you chopping paint? Short stroking the trigger? Outshooting the hopper?

it usually chops the balls right before they fall all the way in

Having never seen you shoot, I can only guess that you short-stroke the trigger occasionally. Also be careful (shoot slow) when your running low on paint in the hopper. The balls will bobble around, and it gets easy to chop.

what does short stroke mean??

pull the trigger all the way down, before releasing to fire the next shot. if you dont fully pull the trigger down you are shorting the stroke of the trigger. hence, short stroke

get the level 10, you wont regret it.

It means you are not pulling the trigger a full pull & release cycle.

And as stated- a level 10 kit will eliminate your chopping problem.

I've seen it go from anywhere from $65 to $80. I know that Paintballistix (PBX) (http://www.paintballistix.com) has them in stock right now. Give them a call. (The site is being re-done but the store is open.)

Tell them Nick from Black Cell sent you.

Make sure you aren't break paint in the barrel, and if you are make sure you are using the new plastic nubbins. My old wire one was chopping like crazy. But when i replaced it with a new plastic one it worked fine.

What is the serial number of the 'mag? Have you tried the bolt rounding mod? If you are carful you can round the square edge of the bolt nose to not crack the balls in the stack. (Do a search) This helped a lot before LX and was discovered during the LX development.

Don't forget user error - the mag is a mechanical gun that can be short stroked. BTW, is the trigger rod to the correct length? Ever play with it?(DON'T)
