ok heres the deal

Tom had asked about a rare nelspot and I thought I had

come across one in a deal I made a while ago, but it turns

out not to be the marker. but it did re-spark my desire to

restore them, so I will be posting pictures of the resto

and asking for help from anyone willing to give info

I want to keep these for a display with a pair of

new old stock pg bolt actions I have on the wall.

glass beading is similar to sand blasting but instaed of sand it uses small particals of glass and aluminum oxide to remove unwanted materials such as rust and paint.

it has advantages over sand blasting because it will not distort thin metal as easily as sand blasting will

the disadvantage is that the media costs ALOT more than sand does.

bead blasting does a better job in my opinion, take far less time then the other media such as sand

Filling the rust pits, then giving them a good polishing and blueing would look good.

it is a metal treatment used on actualy firearms, it is a black oxide finish wich means it is actualy controled rust

get them chromed. You ever seen those all chrome pistols that those Marine dudes carry around? those are awesome...

I say Nickel finish.

Whatever you do, keep those dates preserved!

Very good looking :) Good job on the project

I just restored one this year that was oh six years younger than yours and not in as bad condition.

I was pretty much able to salvage the original paint? job on there and polished the areas of operation (as well as the barrel). It's still in working order, but definitely isn't a show piece like those will be :)

I'd go with chrome, too. Not only would it look flashy, but you'd get more range, too.

So where's this project at these days? I've got an old 007 that needs some TLC. Let me know how much just for the blast and then let's go from there.

Nice work. Glass blasting was definitely the way to go.

Just for the sake of education: You can sand blast first to get the heavy rust off and then glass bead to help with the finish.

Have you polished up the internal parts? If the barrel and receiver were rusty I presume you had to blast to get the rust out. Back in the day when we had to do this kind of work I rigged up a honing wand to buff out the internals.

DO NOT USE THIS ON PERFECTLY GOOD GEAR!

Build your own flex hone...
I took a wooden dowel 1/4" dia - glued a tube shaped sponge on one end -(thoes cheap pink hair curler foams worked great) then taped emery cloth around the sponge. You want to wrap the emery cloth (heavy duty sand paper) so that the drill spins it correctly. The sponge helps to apply pressure to the abrasive.

If you make a couple of them with different grit you can get a nice honing action on the ID.

For a final polish - wrap cloth around the sponge and use buffing compound.

- You will also want the bolt, hammer and power tube buffed up. Beartex or a scotch brite type material is great for this.

Finaly - if you are restoring them to a true old school state, throw out the pumps. The original 007 didnt have them. What a nasty blister that was.

Enjoy!
