I recently found out that one of my friends has about five acres that we can play on. We looking to set up a feild that can accommodate two teams with 5 or 7 players each. I was hoping you guys could give me some suggestions on field size and number of bunkers to have. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I didn’t build a tournament style field, but have my own rec style field. What I did was walk the planned field area and tried to visualize how I wanted the field to be designed. I then started building bunkers and walls taking advantage of existing trees, dips in the ground, and other elements that were already on the field area.

After putting in a few key bunkers, I actually pretended I was playing to figure out what things would look like when in use (while actually holding a paintball marker… after all THAT is how you will be when playing and it really changes what you may see at any given position). That was a real help for determining firing lanes and where to put in additional bunkers and obstacles. I wanted folks to be able to move around, but still allow some risk. I also wanted the major bunkers to be able to be played from any angles and cover many lanes of fire.

It all depends on what you want out of your field. Mine was built to have two teams start out at opposite sides (they start from a group huddle as in tournament style and then run to their desired positions) and then work their way around the field in a number of ways… to the center or around the edges. My bunkers and obstacles allow for great movement of play and no set pattern or strategy. It is also best for 3-5 man teams, but can go higher… but would be quite chaotic. :D

Rec fields will let you know what to add and what to take away…. While tournament fields are a bit more organized and uniform. So, depending on what type of play you plan on doing on your field, it will determine how you will want to set it up.

Here are just a few that were taken last year…

AFTER a FULL week of clearing:

But these don’t show it’s full size. If you can imagine one more picture showing as much as is seen here, THAT is its size.

And here are just a couple other shots…. The field is actually quite open in spite of what these look like. These were taken on the first big game played on the field, and we have done more work to it since then. And there are more bunkers than are shown.

Thanks for the sugestions. We walked the field yesterday just trying to figure out where to put the boundries. I have alot of clearing work to do but we figured we would start laying out the field and make adjustments to the layout as we go.

i'd say about 20-30 bunkers will be faily suitable for 5 or 7 man.

Thats pretty neato Sam, back in my rec days we built a field! :D We used some huge metal pipes ditched by road workers, and built a TON of little buildings, and stands to get in...It was pretty neat.
