Jethro Tull is technically classic Prog Rock if you want to get technical :-) A few of thier songs (ala Locamotive Breath) are harder rock, but they are a far cry from what is typically considered "metal".

Two things to add besides that..

1st - I've lost all respect for Metallica. When bands start to hire lawyers to sue the fans, they step over a line. I'm not saying that stomping on copyrights is a good thing, or that Napster was right, but Metallica's attitude towards the whole thing was disgusting. That and they havn't made anything decent since Black.

2nd - NO ONE LISTED CLUTCH!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??!?! GO DOWNLOAD SOME ALREADY! :-) They are my favorite purely "metal" band.

C'mon man...Prince Charming is good, Attitude is good...hell, just about every song on their new albums are good. They didn't sue their fans. If you want to think of it as that, I don't care, that's your opinion. It's not that bad that they got rid of Napster anyway, it sucked compared to what's out there. Morpheus, to me is by far the best way to pirate most things besides Hotline. But Hotline is at a whole different level of piracy...of course, you can download anything and everything from it.

I was downloaded from FTP sites long before Napster came around, I didn't even use Napster to begin with, neither did a lot of people.

*proceeds to piss on Creed*

They have to nerve to totally imitate Pearl Jam's sound, and then **** on Pearl Jam. And don't even try to tell me Creed's first album doesn't sound like Pearl Jam, everyone I know thought it WAS Pearl Jam when it started playing on the radio. That plus Scott Stapp is just a.. well, the board would just censor is anyway, so there's no point in explaining further. Thier music is ok, but thier attitudes suck.

something i found the other day i thought was cool...on read audio if you go to the radio stations...might have to look around on the top bar for it...you can do a search...search for rock in english and in the usa, and you should get the option for garageband.com or something like that...and choose heavy metal...extremely cool music coming from a lot of unknown bands

im not usually into the unsigned bands but i really got into it the other day

I'm aware of that, as I'm a huge Tull fan, but listen to "Thick as a Brick", "Bungle in the Jungle", "Bouree", or any other number of thier songs and tell me they are metal. Some other songs, such as "Locomotive Breath", "Aqualung", maybe "My God" etc, those could qualify, but a few songs does not a metal band make :-)

The day I let the people who give out grammy's decide what kind of music is what.. *shivers*

I dont even want to think about it.

Jethro Tull himself sure isn't metal. :-)

He's been dead for hundreds of years now. Jethro Tull is the name of an agriculturalist back from somewhere from 1200 to 1600, I forget when he lived exactly. The band just stole the name. The lead singers name is Ian Anderson, the lead guitarist is Martin Barre, and the other bandmembers have changed over the years.

Just clarifying that there is no one in the name actually named Jethro Tull, but he was a real person.

Thordic, Jethro Tull was an 18th century Agronomist, he invented the Seed drill.

I'm also a bit of a fan, I need to pick up my 6th copy of Broadsword & The Beast, I've worn out 5 copies since the album came out.
And they won the 89 Grammy for Rock Island, arguably their worst album. metallica should have won that, and Tull should have been in for best rock album.

Nice to Know someone else likes Strapping Young Lad. Devon's the only guy I've ever heard of who's actually been committed for putting out an album. His wife committed him for a bit after City came out. (Devon Townsend is the lead singer/songwriter for Strapping Young Lad, and the associated projects like Physicist)

And I disagree... I think JethroTull.com was thier worst album ever. Not only was it a shameless plug for thier website, but the songs sucked. I listen to Hot Mango Flush and I feel ill :-)

Personally I'm a fan of Storm Front. Not one of their biggest albums, but one of my favs. And the cover artwork is cool. (Vinyl, I suppose the CD looks the same, but I try to collect my Tull on vinyl.)

Sorry...

Suicidal Tendancies is/are punk/rock. I suppose they could be considered metalish, but if you go by the standards set by the sound of some other bands in this thread...no. Of course, I could be way off base, I've only heard one song from them (Just Another Love Song)

LimpLinkinKornBizkit or whatever isn't metal.. They just sort of suck. :)

I don't know about Kittie..they come off as more 'hard rock' to me, but I absolutely detest most female singers, so that may have something to do with not listening to closely.

no, they went down the tubes back at master of puppets.
saw them twice in the early 90's not impressed. two different shows a year apart and they were identical, so orchestrated it was pathetic. no spontaneous anything, just rote canned moves and everything.

their first three records were phenominal. they set the bar for metal afterwards but were unable to maintain.

now they borrow their own songs and change the words. all their crap is the same, its quite pathetic.

I agree. Heres what I think And Justice for All is repetative, The Black Album, the lyrics are not of the same caliber. Nevermind anything after Master of Puppets was okay or just plain sucked. The lyrics and the music.
They had about 5 or 6 good songs after M.O.P. They couldn't hold a song out for more than about 5 minutes(don't say the ones on load and reload cause those sucked), What happened to When they could have a song that you could listen over and over again.
Don't say Metallica is heavy metal they're alternative.
I know my spelling and puntuation suck but im only in 8th grade so don't say this is coming from a stupid kid.

I agree completely with dave_p

Finally! People agree with me aboput Meatllica. The thing that pisses me off the most about them is the Napster thing. I remember Lars in an interview saying about how Ride the Lightening got such a buzz: he made like 10 copies, and gave them to 10 of his friends. Then, they made copies and gave them out to their friends, and they made copies and gave them out. So, in a way, him shutting down Napster like that was like him spitting on the way his band got noticed. Really makes you mad. Because, Napster was like an electronic version of that. Also, didn't Napster boots record sales? Oh well, screw Sell Out-ica...

tsc
05-04-2003, 02:05 PM
Well, breg...

it's a little different. Yes, he may have done that unique distro technique, but NO ONE MADE MONEY off of it. If he indeed *gave* them copies, and his friends *gave* copies of it, no one made money.

The recent court action against (grokster, I believe) P2P sharing programs was kicked out because they functione like a VCR-- No one made money off of the copies, therefore it was not piracy. Some are of the opinion that burning a CD makes it piracy, but that's a very grey area.

anyhow, Napster made money. The example I keep thinking of is: They had t-shirts. When you make money off of P2P sharing (no matter how indirectly), it is piracy. Metallica had grounds to put up a stink about that, and I tend to agree with them.

But, yeah, after Master Of Puppets they started to suck. Their recent album(Kill Them All), I honestly couldn't tell the songs apart, they sounded so much alike. Formulaic hard rock, which is (ironically) based on good Metallica. Ah, so it goes.

Am I the only one who still likes Metallica?

That makes sense, as you've introduced me to a few. ;)

FTR, I love Metallica. Just not new Metallica.

I knew the guys in Hatebreed well, when they were in the hardcore scene in the 90's. I dont know if Jamie still sings or not...they rocked though. We used to get the whole crew together, and fit like 10 people into my tempo...lol. I havent heard them in a long time...are they still hardcore?
Some other stuff; Ministry, Clutch, Quicksand, PM5K, local stuff (have been out of that scene for a LONG time though).

That is awesome. I wouldn't really classify 'em as hardcore anymore...more of a metal band now. Their old stuff was some of my favorite music. If you weren't aware, they are played semi (SEMI) regularly on MTV now. (Last time I heard. I don't actually watch MTV, so I can't confirm it.)

*Edit* By the way, I know that Sarah mentioned Eighteen Visions in her list. Everyone should check 'em out. (You Broke Like Glass and That Aint Elvis Playing Piano are great songs.)

the $5.98 garage days revisited ep is probably my favorite metallica, its an ep of covers of punk songs and groups that influenced them. it came out a long long time ago. i dont even know if its still in print. definately essential listening for a metallica fan.

okay enough metallica, im punching out
