It's called "LiteStep". It's a shell for windows that keeps the same windows OS, but basically it's an overhaul on looks. A great website for more info is http://www.litestep.net but it almost never works http://www.automags.org/ubb/frown.gif Other than that I would suggest doing a search on yahoo for more info.

LiteStep absolutely owns Explorer. 'Nuff said.

The only problem is Explorer is install and go. LiteStep can be a little more un-friendly because its all open-source, and you end up coding a lot of your own desktop. I'd only reccomend it for people who are relatively sure they know what they are doing and who are willing to invest the time into setting it up properly. I used to run it on my old computer, and it ran excellently, and if you set it up right, no one else but you will have a clue how to use your computer http://www.automags.org/ubb/smile.gif. I'm just too lazy to set it up on my current computer.

But yeah, if you are so inclined, absolutely go for it. It improves Windows, its free, and uh, well, what other reasons do you need? Oh, it looks a lot prettier, as you can tell.

And then you can say "Bye bye" to Explorer.exe and its damn crashes.

For my desktop, i used a combination of HoverDesk (http://www.hoverdesk.com), Windows Blinds (http://www.stardock.net), and Icon Packager (http://www.stardock.net). As for the skins, you can get em from Here (http://www.dangeruss-industries.com/), Here (http://www.skinbase.org/), or Here (http://www.skinz.org/).

As for the shell replacement - the only reason i didnt use it was because if something goes wrong - its a pain to change back, with my progs all i do is take em away from startup. The downfall of my way is u have to have a pretty good system cuz it sucks up all the system resources otherwise - Enjoi.

I think imma give LiteStep a try - with previous shells ive had no luck, but this one sounds way better, thx for the nfo ppl.

Xtwo, where can I download that style and similar ones? I downloaded some "plastic" LiteStyle thing which looked really cool, but it blew my mind and I got scared and reloaded the old explorer, and deleted the stuff (and my Start Menu icons, and taskbar widths are still screwed). I want something with WinAmp integrated and cool-looking.

Added: The AO directory thing is for autocockers.org, which we're uhhh... Hard at work on or something. I'll let you know if...*errr* WHEN we finish it.

Check out http://www.litestep.net for info on LiteStep. There are thousands of layouts, about 99% of them have integrated Winamp support. The one I'm using has a sonique skin plus a media player in itself for listening to music.

yeah, i juss started messin around with LiteStep, and its awesome. so much better than explorer and its all customizable - i definitely reccommend it, and it doesnt ruin ur comp. what i did was went here (http://delusional.psionstyle.co.uk/) and got ShellONv2 (installed it), which makes switchin back and forth easier if ur juss starting off. then i downloaded both LSD4P (http://rysa.inetz.com/distro/LSD4P-1.3-BETA.exe) and LiteStepGL (http://www.graphic-language.net/distro/LitestepGL.zip) )and installed both of them on separte places on C). Both are these are recommended for beginners of LiteStep. All u have to do then is customize step.rc and personal.rc to your apps(paths etc.).

As for the original desktop i had, i rarely use it anymore cuz it was juss such a hog - and litestep is so much better, but one of my previous posts in this thread as the info for that one .... LMK if u need any help, my AIMSN is Xtwo007

What distro did I use back in '98? God knows... LiteStep was already around 2 years old, but I think that it was still a fairly undeveloped version. I remember doing a lot of step.rc editing by hand to get stuff to work. I used it from Sept. 98 till May or so of 99 (Freshman year of college, I found that Litestep could be easily made secure against the drunken idiots who wandered the halls at night and played HalfLife on the first PC they saw.)

Playing with it now, it seems a lot more user-friendly. I just downloaded LSD4P 1.3B to give it a shot again. That, and a whole plethora of themes to mess with. I'm messing with it on my old PII 266 right now.

If you are a current LiteStep user, any reccomended utils/modules/alt. distros/etc that I should look into? I could figure that out by trial and error, but reccomendations are always appreciated.

LiteStep crashes all the time when you are setting it up. It takes a while to get it running smoothly sometimes, but once you do get it running right, its great.

Anyway, if LiteStep is messed up, Ctrl + Alt + F1 brings up the emergency menu.

If you download LSEnabler, it will let you switch between LiteStep and Explorer easily. Download that using 2K, and then run it under LiteStep.

I think thats what you needed to know, anyway, you weren't very descriptive.

LiteStep has come a long way. The first time I used it was back in Sept of 1998, and it was much harder to work with.

Reboot, but before Windows starts bring up your boot options, this is normally by pressing the F8 key.
From the list of options, select 'Command Line Only' and you'll be booted into DOS.
At the command line type edit C:\Windows\System.ini
The DOS text editor will appear with the System.ini file loaded.
Alter the line that starts Shell= so that it reads Shell=C:\Windows\Explorer.exe (if your Windows directory is not called Windows, change it to what your directory is called).
Save the file and exit the text editor
Reboot
You'll be booted back into your standard Windows Explorer shell. You can now check your settings to make sure everything is ok before trying again.

I don't mind some and all, but my lack of computer experience prevents me from being able to do a lot. Also is it ABSOLUTELY neccesary to have Win 9x, or would ME or 2k work on it.

hey tbone, what resolution are you running your litestep at? i got mine at 1280x1075 and the icons are super small. do you know how to make em bigger without running a higher resolution? i just got it running yesterday and im only learning it so im probably gonna be asking for alot of help over the days. is there a way to skin internet explorer and other programs? im sure ill have many more questions as the days go by, but for now im just trying to get comfortavle with it. thanks

Depending on what LiteStep release and theme you have, different options are available. I run mine @ 1280 * 1024 except that my theme was made for that resolution so the icons are not extremely small. If I ran my theme at 800 * 600, the icons would be very very big because the theme was not made for that resolution; you get the idea. Check any readme files that came with your theme/version and see if they have any notes for what resolution it was made for. Some themes include zipped files of different icons for different resolutions; some do not.

Also, all the editing of LiteStep is mainly done in the "step.rc" file. Open this file to change the major settings in litestep, i.e. links on the desktop, sounds, etc. Just be careful or you could mess something up, but usually it's reversable.

As far as skinning Internet Explorer and the other programs, you'll have to search the internet and find skins separately. If you look in the most recent picture of my desktop above, I have winamp running in the top right, but the skin on it is a Netscape skin that just happened to match my LiteStep theme.

I use litestepgl from http://www.litestep.com

It's a great version of litestep that's:

a) VERY easy to install
b) VERY east to un-install
c) Comes with 10 preset themes + a theme switcher to change with
d) Doesn't come with a background, but it's okay because almost all of the themes will match with any high-resolution image you select. The themes are diverse and will cover many people's preferences.

The background I'm running is made for 1280 * 1024. The theme is made to run at this high resolution as well.

here's my desktop. I disabled explorer. No icons, no start bar. No wasted system resources. This wouldn't work with windows 98, but i'm running XP. And with XP ctrl+alt+del brings up a task manager from which you can "start new tasks" (open programs) not just close old ones, as with windows98. I like it, nice and simple. And there's no more friggin annoying start bar at the bottom of the screen. I just alt+tab to switch programs. My computer hasn't crashed since i disabled explorer and it runs smoother now. Down with useless background applications!

I checked the website of the guy who made it (http://doodle.quadrent.net) but that site is also down (for now anyway, it says it'll be back soon). I put on that litestepgl thing, then when I went to uninstall it, and now I have no desktop at all. When I reboot, it's still looking for a step.rc file, but I dont have one

Gimp, if you want your good 'old windows back (and your desktop too), you'll need to go into the system.ini in the windows directory. Once in there, change the command line:

shell=c:\litestepgl\litestep.exe

to

shell=c:\windows\explorer.exe

Then save the file and reboot, that should fix your problem. Any more difficulty, drop me an e-mail and I'll help.
