Probablly dosn't count but I was in ROTC At Central Missouri State University for two and a half years and made it to the rank of Caedt Lt before my knees kept me from passing the PT test and being commishioned. While I was there I posted top scores in all fields except the pt.

I'm not a military man. Unfortunately I was to fat during a non-war time. My brother is turning 15 this year and is definately looking towards the Marines. He knows so much about them it's scary. I think his favortie is Chesty Puller. I've read up on him. Definately a lead eater and nail pooper. My bro wnats to get into the sniper core but my folks and I are trying to explain to him that aafter his tour is up there's not a whole heck of a lot of calling for that in the private sector.

I'm an Army Brat (Dad served in the 60's and still works for the DOD), but they won't take me on account of my poor vision. [read: blind as a bat without my coke-bottle glasses] http://www.automags.org/ubb/smile.gif

My cousin was in the Air Force, but we lost him in the mid-80s when his F15 crashed in New Mexico.

Ok who can tell me the differance between Ex and Former marine? I was told there is a BIG BIG differance but I wasn't told what it was.

09-09-2001, 07:57 PM
I am not sure, but it could be a semantics game.

EX indicating being forced out dishonorably, and Former being someone who used to be, but was honorably discharged?

I am a Former Soldier, but would not call myself an EX Soldier. But I have assisted in the making of EX Soldiers in my day. I think this might be what was meant. EX just tends to have a negative connotation to it.

Thanks Army! That sounds like what a Marine would say. LOL Thanks for clearing up that issue.

Now my Rant (As if this was not foreseen. LOL)….

But I think we both know a few Civilians that used to be Serving Marines (and other branches), and if they still called themselves Marines (or whatever), other than in spirit, I would laugh them out of my house. I am all for giving people their dues, but I also believe in a bit of honesty. Which overall the Marine Corps lacks… nothing that they have done is better or more “heroic” than any other branch of the service at one point in time or another.

You will find the same types of fighting and dieing done by troops in all the services. And it does not take away from any one service to point this out. The Marines have just ALWAYS had a better PR Guy. LOL

I think this is where most of the rivalry problems come in. I don’t know a single War in this Century that one branch of the service was the “winning team”. Or that one branch deserved the “most credit”. It is a combined effort, and one that contrary to what Marines would like people to believe, is no longer spear-headed by Marine troops.

The Marines lost that honor back a while ago, and they lost it to the Army Light Infantry. That caused some issues with people, but they learned to deal with it. Now the Army Light Infantry lost the honor to the Army Military Police. And this is because of the types of missions being conducted now days. The MP’s are the most armed (person for person) unit in the Military (minus Special Forces of any branch), and have the special training to handle many of the Problems (as in Peace Making and Keeping) that standard Combat troops just did not have because of their normal roles in Warfare.

But this brings me down to my point about a bit of honesty……

A fat, out of shape, foul mouthed, low class, fatigue wearing, former “anything” is just that. And no matter WHAT branch of the service they served in (to INCLUDE the Marine Corps), they are no longer one of them.

What sets former Military folks who deserve to be actively recognized as such is NOT the fact that they WERE, but how they act each and every day. It is also that special air of pride and dignity that seems to emanate from them no matter what the situation or location they find themselves in. It is their ability to take care of their families and friends, and be a productive member of society. It is all this and more… but it is NEVER the fact that they once served and had the Title of Marine, Soldier, Airman, or Sailor. Being one and maintaining the spirit of one is a way of LIFE, not a reflection of your past.

We must not only serve our countries with pride and dignity while IN the Services, but also when we are NOT. There are no “past heroes”, no one single act can make a person a hero, it is who a person is and how they live every day that does that. The single acts of heroism are only the visual outward signs of the overall true person. Thus, one heroic act does not make a hero… but that in conjunction with how they live every day, is what makes them the true hero.

And sorry to say, no one branch of service corners the market on any of the following:

Pride
Heroism
Dignity
Dedication
Honor
or Bravery.

They ALL deserve our respect, gratitude, and thanks… and none more than any other. Sure we have our “favorites”, but I think in the big picture we can all agree that it is a team effort, and without any of the players the team would lose.

Did I go too far? LOL

I served in the Air Force from 89'to 91'. Funny thing is I went to tech. school(tactical electrical environmental systems specialist whoo...) at Chanute AFB in Illinois and now since they closed the base I play paintball in the old movie theater. Called Splat-Tactics, a great place to play indoors when the cold Illinois winters get here.

I am 19 and am currently in college. I would like to fly helicopters for the US Army. Little family history:

Grandfather: Former (if you ask him "current":D ) US Marine in WW2. Spent most of his time in the Pacific. Made it up to lance corporal.

Father: Joined the Navy in the late 70's and got out in the mid 80's. Served on a Knox Class Frigate, the USS Moinister and also on the USS Independence, a Forrestal(?) Class. Made it up to LtJg.

Uncle: Went to the Airforce Acadamy. Flies C-5 (REALLY, REALLY big cargo plane). Got out in early February to fly for the airlines, is now back in (wanna guess why:D ). He's a Major.

Stepbrother's first father: Rescue Swimmer in the Coastguard. Made it to Petty Officer Second Class before being killed in a helicopter crash in 1986.

That leaves me no other alternative for military service than the US Army, less I wish to start a civil war in my family:D :D

I'm currently a contracted Cadidiot, Army ROTC. I'm in Pershing Rifles and Scabbard and Blade. My Captain said he sees me in SIG (Cool) or Chem Corps (EWW!), and I like Cav so Aviation or Armor are on my top 3. Not really a true ground pounder type. My dad was Air Force and I thought about going that way, but I like the Army. Anyway, time for my military history quote:

My family has over 250 years of military service in the past 3 generations without a single combat fatality.

Grandfather was in Korea, Army.
Cousin is an Air Force F-16 pilot overseas right now.
Sister's boyfriend will be a F-15E backseater.
Uncle was in communications in Air Force.
And on, and on, and on...

i served two years active army in germany as a tanker, 1st AD -> best time of my life, and leaving was the hardest thing i've ever done . . .

kinda funny, w/ a two year enlistment as a tanker, i spent 6 months as dismounted infantry w/ UN, and another 4 months as a stinking clerk once the 'Man' found out that i could use a PC . . . grumble grumble . . . but man do i miss all that horsepower !!!

currently enlisted in the ANG

i am always reading about guns/wars.. i think a major part of my life must deal with serving my country. my goal would be to become a sniper in the Marines, but if that doesnt work, i'd wanna be a sniper for the SWAT team. i could never in my life sit at a computer for a days work, soo soo boring, no fun at all.. need to shoot, its my livelyhood.. :)

I will hopefully be a future Naval Aviator.. I plan on attempting to gain a slot in F/A-18's which, in the near future many of the current jets and thier roles will be given to the F/A-18, so I think I stand an alright chance...

A little back ground..

Grandfather was in the beginging's of what are today's "SEALS", he was a commando and then some how wound up flying Pby's in the Navy...

Uncle was a test pilot for Grumman and flew F-4's and F-14's with the Jolly Rogers Squadron.. He survived a Mid-Air with a Russian Tupelov Bear Bomber in the late 70's early 80's not sure.. Currently a Captain at Southwest flying 737's..

My dad also flew in the Navy... He flew S-2 Trackers and S-3 Vikings with VS-31 on the USS Independence... He has since moved on to the airlines.. He flew Dc-9's and 727's with Eastern until they went belly up in the late 80's and has spent the last 10 or so years with Federal Express... He has moved between DC-10's, Md-10's and 727's.. He is currently a Captain on the seven-two's...

So, I'm going to join the Navy when I grad. bust my hump and gain a pilot slot, hopefully get Hornets..do my 12 or so years and then get into the commerical biz.. that's my plan, and I'm stickin to it.. :)

GO NAVY!!!
