Ahead With Horses

Ahead With Horses is a therapeutic riding organization which works with children who are very badly disabled. Most cannot walk, some are blind, some have little chance of survival, but all benefit from the devotion of the AWH staff.

The child starts out learning on a wooden barrel to simulate the feel of a horse. Many of the children are terrified in the beginning, most have never been out of their wheelchair except to be carried... Eventually, however, they graduate to sitting on the horse with the trainer behind them and another one along side. Slowly trust builds and different techniques are added, each one specifically designed to help strengthen the child's weakest muscles. No saddle is used as the movement of the horse helps to stimulate certain muscles and nerve endings that could not be exercised were a saddle used and, as fear leaves, work quickly turns to pure joy.

How long before we begin to see improvement? For some, a few months. For others, a few years or longer. But we NEVER stop trying so long as the child keeps coming. We don't demand improvement. We only try to provide the means by which improvement can happen. And they all do improve. Perhaps it can't always be measured at the physical level but it is in their spirit, their joy and their smiles.

LA's Best

In September of 1988, the City of Los Angeles took a bold step outside of traditional city business to create an innovative after school program to address the alarming rise in street gangs, school dropouts and drug use in communities where children lacked adequate adult supervision during the critical hours between 3-6 p.m.

The program, called LA's BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow), approaches inner-city children as resources to be developed rather than problems to be solved. From its original 10 sites, LA's BEST has grown to serve over 18,000 students in 111 elementary schools.

Key program elements include:

Partnership - with the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Council, the Los Angeles Unified School District and the private sector.

Child Safety - children report feeling significantly safer in the LA's BEST program than in their neighborhoods and there is a 64% reduction in reported school-based crime at long-running
LA's BEST programs.

Staff - includes management personnel at the Office of the Mayor and the
Central Office of LAUSD and more than 1200 site staff, which results in an adult-child ratio of 1:20.

Daily Enrichment - including but not limited to homework assistance, science and computer activities, sports, theater and visual arts, reading for recreation, and field trips – all at no cost to parents.

Collaboration - with over 100 community-based organizations to provide diverse and meaningful activities.

Recognition - from the Carnegie Corporation, U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities, the Children's Defense Fund, CNN, CBS and the Christian Science Monitor, among others; also, LA's BEST won a local Emmy Award for its 60-second PSA, "Dreams".

Independent Research - the UCLA Center for Study of Evaluation has conducted five independent evaluations of the LA's BEST program over the past 10 years. Find out about these encouraging results in the Learn From Us section of this website.

Fundraising - efforts have raised millions of dollars in private funds from corporations, foundations and individual donors. Donate Now!

Replication - by San Jose, Sacramento and San Diego; LA's BEST also was a model for 1997 state and federal legislation for after school programs and over 300 U.S. cities have inquired about replication. LA's BEST After School Enrichment Program is a model for the restructuring of all after school programs in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
