I am sitting at work and all of our north east sites died. So, can anyone in New York, Detroit, or Toronto get on the internet? Do you have power? What's the word?

Cleveland's power is out. I'm about 45 min south of cleveland, and in some places it's on, some it isn't. Kind of random. Also stop lights continue to go out even in the last 15 minutes or so :-/

I have power however.

Central Canada and Ontario are also out of power. Canada supplies a huge amount of power to the States. The news is saying there has been problems with the Canadian supply of this power grid, and this is what you got.

I am in NJ and so far we have power.
Watching news and NY is a mess. Subways not working. it goes from NY to Det. and into Canada Pretty much the North East

Why dont they just switch off E and put the power grid in manual:)

Maybe this is a case of poor mis-managment. I am sure it is just a problem with the transformer like they said on the news.

No Redundancy can really screw up the day for millions of people, can't it?

the electronics systems they use are very glitchy. in rhode island the power has gone off a couple times and the hospital generators dont kick in for apparently the same reason this happened over such a large area

I can't even get to work this morning. NJ transit is running on Sat schedule, and even that was 45 minutes behind. The subways are shut, and the buses are running limited service. Luckily I calle the office and found out we had the day off. :D

I'm from Western MA about 45 minutes from the boarder with NY. I've had power the whole time, but two power surges happened at 4:10p.m and 5:30p.m. EST, No biggy though.

I just heard on the Today Show that it started west of Ontario in Canada. The NY powerstation said to have been hit by lightning is actually one of the few that have been providing electricity.

Does MA make it's own power, I think we do with the Old School coal powerstations? Since we were surrounded by states without power. According to the news, NY, CT, NH, and VT were without power, so that makes us cut off. Does anyone know why this would occur?

I got power back sometime around 4am ... it's 8am now.

Talk about Teh suck! I think there are a few pockets around town without power now, and it seems most people are off today. I heard about looting last night, which saddens me ... This is Ottawa, I would hardly ever expect something like that from a city such as ours, but it happened.

Well I hope everyone gets a speedy return back to normal (electrical)life!

We got power back around 10 pm. As for the looting, you're living in a governmant town. The politicians there are always looting.

The power is back on in Queens now, but no cable tv. I get to take a day off work and I can't even rot my mind with Cartoon Network.

Strange, I was watching CNN and CBC Newsworld and they said that the problem started in N. New York state near Niagara Falls (geez New York always has the bad luck with big problems), and since it failed and shorted out major circuits, this caused a strain on the whole system and most got shut down.

Funny side story. Apparently, one crew in an Ontario station saw all of the other stations losing power and whatnot, and decided to isolate themselves somehow (disconnect from the main grid or something), and managed to stay operational. Can you say employees of the month? ;)

accually NH, MA, ME and VT all had power because they shut down from the niagra grid automatically. The whole black out happened in 9 seconds. thats uber fast!

Mine came back around 12:40PM. Yes Canada does supply most of the power to you guys,(WE HAVE THE POWER!!!! :D) but, from everyhting I have heard, it was a grid in NY that overloaded and cause other power grids to re-route power to compensated. When one wen down, the rest followed. :(
