View Full Version : The Vee-Twin 'Cocker...

... Lives!

Finally got all the little finishing points chased down, and actually launched paint with it.

I still have to tune the pressure and springing a bit, then switch it over to a RaceGun frame for a real workout.

Then a little cosmetic milling, some anno, and there ya go- the Nastiest Autococker on the block. :D

Nice work! What pressure is it running at? I was wondering because you still have one valve and now it has to fire 2 balls:confused: I'm interested to see how it looks when you're finished!

Holy crap, if you can do 15 BPS, that thing will spit out 30. Is there any chance you could do a video of that? It would be insane to watch.

I think the best part about that entire setup.... the ram!

Can't tell from that pic, but the ram is actually going down the MIDDLE of the body. Not on the side by a groove, but through the body. It's a damn fine piece of craftsmanship.

I want to know where you find the time to both do this custom work and to write up those great Whiteboard comics!

If I send you two Cockers, how much to do that?

Sparks
08-18-2003, 02:38 PM
It looks like he machined a single-piece body from scratch. So, if you send two cockers, he'd probably use the valves, hammers and springs, and send you back two cocker bodies.

08-18-2003, 03:06 PM
Doc had a ton of old "not cocker" bodies that he got very cheap. This looks like a pair hes had some fun with.

Put the e-blade trigger on it is way better than the racegun and your gonna need a really fast ram like the smc freeflow ram and put the rest of the freeflow parts on cause they are the best.

Doc Nickel

It is indeed milled from a single block. It's a once-piece body:

http://www.docsmachine.com/galleries/veetwin/veeblock.jpg

"Freeflow parts are the best", eh? :D

Ah, I love the mindless parroting of advertising hype...

"Freeflow" rams are SMC units, just like most of the others out there, and SMCs aren't a whole lot different than Clippards, and Clippards aren't a whole lot different than stock WGP rams. If it's in good shape (isn't binding or worn) one ram will work just as fast as another- with, perhaps, very, very minor variances due to the internal volume, but this is on the scale of small fractions of a millisecond.

I'm using a Palmer's QuikRam, (which is a custom-designed piece made by Clippard) since it's a larger bodied unit, and one of the only ones out there that actually was designed for PB gun use.

Freeflow valves are not significantly different than stock valve, RATs or Orracle units. I'm using a custom-made "Tornado" copy I milled from steel, with two ports and a real Tornado cup seal. I do want some measure of efficiency from this thing, and the Tornado is one of the few "clean sheet of paper" designs out there that does what it's advertised to do- allow for greater efficiency and thus allowing a reduction in operating pressure.

But I digress. :D

Man, I still can't get over how cool that is. Tha backblock must be messmerizing to watch (But a video would help convey that better, I'm sure :D).

Doc, what's the cycling pressure on that fine piece of work?

As much as I'd like to take credit for the double-'Mag, that's not my work.

When that thing hit the cover of APG, I was still shooting old Cobra pumps and we thought that 68 Specials were "high tech".

There was a writeup not too long ago on this board about who actually did make the double-'Mag, but I don't recall the details. I understand it's been passed around, sold a few times, upgraded, modded, changed, etc. over the years.

AWSOME WORK DOC, MAJOR PROPS.

And back in the day did paintball players always look that goofy? Cause thats hilarious

Doc Nickel

Actually, no.

The cover caused something of a stir- at least in our little group- remember, this was paintball (an odd new sport) in backwater Alaska (I&I SPorts wouldn't sell us equipment because they wouldn't ship "outside the United States") in 1991 (paintball as a whole was only nine years old, semiautos were a brand-new craze, a 100-round hopper was huge, and Dave Youngblood was only sixteen.)

It was the first time any of us had seen anyone try and play- or at least pose, appearing to play- in anything but some sort of camoflage.

The hot, trick thing to do back then, remember, was to locate oddball camo patterns: Russian special-ops camo, Belgian Legionnaires' desert pattern, that sort of thing. There were few "harnesses" other than the JT vests that held tubes- guppies were mere 50-round pots that not everyone could use, as many hoppers still had small lids designed for 10-round tubes.

These guys were dressed in bright colors, with the first-time-seen bright-color goggles. This was something new: the idea that you don't have to crawl through the grass, hide, or try and blend in with the foliage.

However, the photo was staged- the goggs were JT's "refs" helmets, and the "armor" was JT Motocross stuff, which has been brightly-colored for years.

But it looked cool. Moreso at the time.

Oh really?!? I always thought it was your work. It doesn't matter, it's not like you can't make a double mag. Any plans of making your own version of the double mag? I'm sure it would look a lot better.

In a couple of years we're all gonna look back at photos of ourselves (in paintball gear) and laugh at how funny we look now...trends and styles always change, but they will always get there inspiration from what was once in!

kinda too late now bc the feed tubes are pointing away from each other, but you should have designed it to use one hopper. that would be Awesome..

Maybe.... warp it? find a way to split the hose into both breaches?:p

i made the ATM submission...

when i saw the first page i though dual warps would look sick, then i saw the double mini and although it looks kinda cluttered, it still looks cool cause theres no double blimp target for opposing snapshooters.

That thing rocks, keep it up doc

and yeah, when is the winner going to be decided?
