Veg's must see/have DVD list *MOVIE FANS*

    (EDIT) - UPADTED 2-16

    And here it is.

for the past week I have been scouering my house, my friend's houses, my reletive's houses, and the houses of other people I don't know... in search of great movies to reccomend to everyone. These are movies that everyone should see, and if possible, see multiple times. amazon.com has almost eveyr one of thse on DVD and their prices arent bad, although sometimes you can find one real cheap at walmart under a stack of something.

I suggest that all these be seen on DVD when possible with dolby 5.1 audio. I wouldn't have it any other way.

So here's my 2003 up-to-date list of movies to see/buy:

    IN NO SPECIFIC ORDER:

Back to the Future DVD Trilogy - This is a MUST HAVE in ANY DVD COLLECTION! You cannot beat it. Just can't.

Caddyshack - What can I say? The classic quotable comedy.

Fight Club - Another must own DVD. Everyone has seen it, everyone loves it.

The Matrix - Again: everyone's seen it, everyone loves it. If you don't have it on DVD, get it. Why have something on DVD that you have already seen a million times on Showtime? That wehn when some schmuck comes over and says he's never seen it, you can strap himn down in a chair in front of the TV and make him watch it.

AntiTrust - A lot of people said this was a lemon... I still think it is a great movie and if you are into computers/programming.. this is a must have.

GoldenEye 007 - My personal favorite movie, this is IMO the greatest James Bond film. Watching it on DVD with true 5.1 surround is a must.

Tron - Get the DVD. It is worth it IMO. The film is over 20 years old, and was the first to employ 3D graphics in a movie. And now that I see it, I am still amazed at how great the graphics were for their time.

Patriot Games - A interesting movie based off the Tom Clancy book. Harrison Ford as jack Ryan in this one (yay!)

Ronin - this is for the action/speed fan. This movie has the greatest car chase scne EVER FILMED and that is not just my opinion. Chocked full of chases, shootouts, explosions... gotta love it.

2001: A Space Odyssey - I sure hope you have seen this one. Amazing.. breathtaking.. a classic, elegantly filmed masterpeice. Not only is the film style wonderful but the soundtrack is again, breathtaking.

Pi - interesting movie. Rent it for sure.

Band of Brothers DVD box set - If you got 80 bucks.. go for it. A great series. IF you likes Saving Private Ryan, you will like this.

Clear and Present Danger - another based off of a Tom Clancy book with Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. Good view.

Strange Brew - A little known movie, this is a story about two canadian brothers who uncover a evil genious's plot in the midst of devising schemes to get free beer. Yea.. it is that good. A good one to rent and watch with a bunch of guys.

    The French Connection

    Schindler's List

Saving Private Ryan - do I have to say anything?

    Indian Jones (all of them!)

Star Wars Trilogy - (notice I said trilogy.)

Dave Matthews Band - Live at Folsom Field DVD. OK so thats not a must have for everyone, but definately a must have for DMB fans.

    Dumb and Dumber

    Porky's

Grand Prix - for all the racign fans, a must see. Narrated by Stacy Keach (Titus).

    Minority Report

    The Borne identity

    Enemy of the State

    1984

Half Baked - another one to rent and watch with the guys.

The Thunderbird DVD set - if you got money to burn.. this is a great way to spend it.

    Terminator 1&2

    Apocolyspe Now

    LOTR 1&2

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

    Patlabor 2: The Movie

    The Ladies Man

Space Balls - 'They Jammed our radar sir...'

    Apollo 13

    Patton

    Resevoir Dogs

Being John Malkovich - John Cusak anyone?

Final Fantasy - the plot was not that great IMO, but the movie is 3d animation at it's finest. Not some crappy Toy Story look either. In parts of the movie you will not know that you are watching computer generated charatcters.

LIST WILL BE UPDATED!!!! I KNOW I FORGOT MANY GREAT MOVIES-
I have seen so many I can't remebr them all at once. I will try to update this list when I think of more of my picks.

Yes it will. He's just waiting to release them a couple years after the 3rd movie. He wants to addd some scenes to the first three (Ep:4-6). I know for sure that he wants to add a flashback scene to the part where Vader dies. And if we're lucky he'll redo that lightsaber fight in Episode 4.

Where exactly is my favorite movie of all time?

              HEAT
Superb acting (after all, Pacino and DeNiro aren't too shabby ) and the best "cops and robbers" shootout ever.

I think what George Lucas said was the original trilogy in its ORIGINAL form will never make it to DVD. Whatever does make it will be the special editions or something else. This has bothered alot of fans since they wanted to see the same version they saw in theaters.

I would like to see both make it to DVD, original and SE. There were some changes in the SE that sucked.

Greedo shooting first? I thought it was much better to have Han show some wannabe bounty hunter the reason why you want both hands visible instead of making it PC and in self defense. How do you miss a guy sitting across a table?

OK, enough of me geeking out...

As much John Wayne on DVD as possible.

Porky's? Dumb and Dumber? boooooo! Despite being cult classics, they were just so bad.

Tombstone. Ya gotta love that soundtrack.

Apollo 13. Quite possibly mans greatest triumph over near total failure.

                      Patton. 'nuf said.

Forrest Gump. Nobody could have played that character, with as much conviction, as Tom Hanks. Besides, who hasn't gone out in the rain and yelled; "You call this a storm?"

The Rambo Trilogy. Yeah, it's almost as cheesy as it gets, but they set the standard for all action flicks since.

                      Tora! Tora! Tora!

To Hell And Back, the Audie Murphy Story. Mediocre production values, but the real man stars in his own story.

Chicken Run. So many backhanded references to famous movies that I lost count. Great fun film.

Wizard of Oz. For it's day, one of the most elaborate films ever. With a symbol of innocence as the main character.

Gone With The Wind. For it's day, one of the most elaborate films ever...but with a slut as the main character

I agree except with Pootie Tang. A friend recommended it to me, he said it was the funniest movie he had ever seen, and hyped it up. When I saw it, I laughed at a few parts, but it really wan't that great.

And Army, how can you not like Dumb and Dumber? It's stupid comedy at its best.

What I want to know is....

Where's Scarface? Where's Donnie Darko? Pulp Fiction? Reservoir Dogs? Clerks? Chasing Amy? Dogma? Mallrats?

Kevin Smith doesn't get enough credit.

This has prompted me to list the BOFH required viewing DVD list.

Now, this list isn't a list of good movies, but movies which have been transfered well to DVD and excellent examples of the DVD medium

                              Das Boot.

                              The professional.

Why? Because if you know those filmed lanuage, you don't have to listen to the bad dubbing, and still have subtitle or dubbing if you want.

                              2001
                              Akira
                              Apollo 13
                              Saving Private Ryan
                              The Fifth Element

Good examples great visual and sounds available to most DVD watchers. Just closer your eyes in the first twenty minutes of Saving Private Ryan, things are going on all around you.

                              Brazil.

This is the a huge amount of extra material available in this package. Good Movie too.

This is not an exhustive list of good movies available, but my gold standard of what takes advantage of the DVD format.

While I'm fond of The Seven Samurai and Yojimbo et al. They aren't more than nice quality transfers to a new format.
