There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?
can you take any letter from the nine or do you start at the last one and work your way down to the first???
Oh i heard this one, so i can answer it!!There is a common English word that is nine letters long. The word is:
startling
starting
staring
string
sting
sing
sin
in

Man, you guys are smart...
This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it! In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out! Try to do so without any coaching!
Ah! I can't believe I missed all the good ones. There aren't any E's in the paragraph. That's weird. Or interesting.
A man takes a barrel that weighs 20 pounds, and then puts something in it. It now weighs less than 20 pounds.
What did he put in the barrel?
HELIUM!
What is the only liquid that isn't wet?
He put a hole in the barrel to make it weigh less.
There is a town in Texas where 5% of all the people living there have unlisted phone numbers. If you selected 100 names at random from the town's phone directory, on average, how many of these people would have unlisted phone numbers?

You are right: Mercury!Originally posted by Jack & Coke

I guess the answer would be 5% or 5 people if 5% of the hundred hold true to the average.
None. You will not find unlisted phone numbers in a phone directory.Originally posted by 1stdeadeye

What gets wetter the more it dries?
Seeing as i just got out of the shower, and you just puzzled the hell outta me, and i started thinking...
MY TOWEL DID THAT!
Correct!
The 22nd and 24th presidents of the United States had the same mother and the same father, but were not brothers. How can this be possible?
Same guy. He was the only president elected to two terms non-consecutively!Originally posted by Jack & Coke

In the figure below (see attachment), the rectangle at the corner measures 2 cm x 4 cm. What is the radius of the circle in cm?
I'm guessing the diameter is 20cm... so the radius is 10cm?
My Feedback
UBLPB. UBLPB. UBLPB.
correct!
Equation 1
x^2 + y^2 = r^2
Equation 2
r = 4 + x
r = 2 + y
or
x = r - 4
y = r - 2
Sub Eq 2 into Eq 1
(r-4)^2 + (r-2)^2 = r^2
r^2 - 8r + 16 + r^2 - 4r + 4 = r^2
r^2 -12r + 20 = 0
(r-10)(r-2)=0
r = 10
r = 2 does not work
NEW ONE (easy)
A cylinder 105 cm high has a circumference of 20 cm. A string makes exactly 7 complete turns round the cylinder while its two ends touch the cylinder's top and bottom. How long is the string in cm?
(as an example, the attached pic shows 4 complete turns)

Previous Question:
A cylinder 105 cm high has a circumference of 20 cm. A string makes exactly 7 complete turns round the cylinder while its two ends touch the cylinder's top and bottom. How long is the string in cm?
105 cm / 7 = 15 cm (each segment)
If you "unroll" the cylinder, you have a rectangle that is 15 cm x 20 cm (each segment).
The diagonal for this segment = (15^2 + 20^2) ^ .5 = 25 cm
Since we have 7 segments, we have 25 x 7 = 175 cm (Answer)

If the difference of two numbers is 10 and their product is 18, what is the sum of their squares?
p.s. thanks SprayingMango
The answer is 212!
Please give us a hard one, like: Who's on First?
212 is incorrect...Originally posted by 1stdeadeye

Regarding: If the difference of two numbers is 10 and their product is 18, what is the sum of their squares?
No solution yet?
the sum is somewhere around 64-65
I found out that 2.35 and 7.65 were very close, but I'm not good with math so yah... I don't know any equation stuff yet. But lemme know jack
Let a = one number
Let b = the other number
equation 1:
a-b = 10 "...difference of two numbers is 10..."
equation 2:
ab = 18 "...their product is 18..."
the square of equation 1:
(a-b)^2 = 10^2
a^2 - 2ab + b^2 = 100
a^2 + b^2 = 100 + 2ab
a^2 + b^2 = 100 + 2(18) (substitute equation 2)
a^2 + b^2 = 100 + 36
a^2 + b^2 = 136 "...the sum of their squares..."
The answer is 136.
We actually did not have to find out what a and b are. We just needed to know their product.
