Well I made a complete butt of myself at the field the other day....I had an extremely long work week. I guess I should have taken that into account and not went at all.
I got to the field and there was a small turnout. Only about 6 people there, with two refs. Given that one or two people would leave in between each game to refill air or paint it was generally a 2 on 2 with 2 refs.
My first game out we picked up teams, me and another guy vs. a dad who plays often and his newbie 13-15 year old son. The game starts and we all run to our bunkers, pretty much mirroring each other. Knowing that no one else is going to try very hard to move I decide to leave my anchor spot in the back and play front for the fun of it. I mean hey it is a "friendly" rec game, and I like to try to play out of position when I can.
I run from the back mid left to the back left. My guy was holding in my mirror, and I had the cross field shot on his, so I kept him in and moved up to the 30 left. I took a few shots on the bunker, fired a volley to put the other team in and started to make a run for the center 50.
I am a pretty big and slow guy. So if I get caught on the run its really easy to eliminate me. Generally why I play anchor... well as I am running for the 50 the newbie kid pops out and just mows on me. I am talking about he just starts firing as fast as he can and blasts me with 7-10 shots. I stop running, put up my hands and marker and he keeps on shooting me another 5 or so times. I can hear the ref yelling that I am out, but he doesn't stop. So I step into the shadow of the 50 bunker and he stops firing. I have my marker up and am pulling out my barrel plug. As I walk out the other side the kids goes nuts on me again, lighting me up another 5-8 times. I can hear both refs yelling to him that I was already out. I mean it should have been obvious the first time when 5 balls broke down one side, not including the bounces, I stop running, firing and put my hands up.....but...
So I completly loose it. I completly forget that its a kid who has just overshot the hell out of me. I start yelling at this kid, cussing him out about overshooting. I lifted up my marker and vblast a volley at his bunker asking how the ___ he likes being overshot, as I quit shooting I yell at him that its a good clue you got someone when paint busts on them, they quit running, firing back, and are putting their barrel plug on. I can't even tell you how bad I cussed this guy out. Like I said I got so pissed that I just completly forgot time and place and went into rage mode.
Well the very instant this happened, I am walking back up to the top to pack up my gear and regretting loosing my cool that way. I felt so bad. In spite of what he did to instigate the situation by WAY overshooting me, it was totally wrong of me to act that way.
Well the owner of the field and I are good friends. The dad had instantly run to him and demanded that I be removed from the field. I was already leaving anyway, too pissed to play, but the owner looks at the guy and tells him that he will not be told how to run his field. Well this dad knows the man whos business lic. this field runs under and calls him raising hell, and is an old family friend of his. He tells the owner and proprieter that if I am not expelled from the field he will bring legal action. Both refs came up and backed me up to a point, in that the kid really way overshot me, causing the situation. The guy that runs the field is backing me up also. But as I understand the dad has yet to talk to the actual business owner in person, and as I said is threatening legal action against the field, possibly me.
I am unsure as to whether I will be able to play there any more. I am also a bit worried about the legal threat. Is there honestly anything he can do?
I feel terrible about allowing my emotions to run away that way. I have already apologized to the the owner. I haven't had the opp. to talk to the kid and dad, and was advised not to even if I did.
