    Aerodynamics and Velocity of Paintballs

    my question is this: Paintballs are usually spherical, which is one of the easiest forms for any piece of matter to form, as seen in bubbles. When a paintball flies through the air since the paintball is a sphere does a rifled barrel do anything for it, sincs a spinning sphere is still a sphere (does the shape warp)? from a physics standpoint no matter what it deaccelerates and falls at -9.81 m/s no matter what, and how fast it travels in that time is solely based upon its speed. What does rifling do for paintballs? does it help maintain a straight trajectory? does it accelerate a paintball? does it do anything?

          For the long and short of it....rifling seems to have little if any effect on paintball trajectory. There are too many factors for it to work as designed.

          I had a mag with the Armson rifled barrel and it didn't seem to hurt anything, but I can't honestly say it was any better either.

          As of right now the only two barrels I know of that have any real effect are flatlines and that thing for the end of the barrel that makes it curve...can't think of the name of it.

              Having a rifled barrel or spinning a paintball shows no marked improvement in it's accuracy. This does not mean that it doesn't work which is a common misconception. I have seen paintballs fired from a rifled barrel punch through brush that break paint from a smooth bore barrel. Personly I swear by Armason Barrels. But that's my opinion. In the end it's all personal opinon and matching the size of the paintball to the size of the barrel. With a poor barrel match it won't matter if it's smooth or rifled, heck it won't even matter if you paid $1 or $1000. You going to shoot poorly. Try a rifled barrel with a good paint match. If you like it, use it. If you don't, then don't use it. I'll always use Armason Barrels if I can.

                                              Before it gets oversimplified into "rifling doesn't help a sphere" this is a syndrome that is best applied only to paintballs. It has to do with size and weight that cause such physics to have such a noticeable effect on them. Remember that rifled muskets were considerably more accurate than smoothbores. Just saying, before it gets too "easy" and wrong.

                                                  well lets just jack the weight up about 100% and problem solved.

                                                  It is that simple and it aint wrong. A rifled barrel on a Paintball gun does nothing for accuracy. We are talking about a paintball gun and not a musket.
