      You are all WRONG!!!

non-rifled barrels impart spin that effects accuracy.

RRfireblades hand-made rifled barrels have been shown to increase range by over 1,000 feet and accuracy by at leat two orders of magnitude.

Ported barrels increase gas efficiency by relieving the pressure in front of the ball as it travels down the barrel

      and

since the ball deforms in the barrel under air pressure, its not a sphere that's being shot, so any discussion of the aerodynamic of 'spheres' is pointless.

Now, those of you who know me realize that all of the above is hyperbole and are only a partial result of my BS degree conferred upon me in 1981 (the same year paintball was invented btw)

Let's see how many 'degrees' this post generates from those who aren't familiar with my 'style'.

Neither is a golf ball, a baseball, or a tennis ball when they are hit, but their properties of flight are accurately modeled on a sphere. Spherical shape is regained in a short amount of time. The percentage of the total fligt time that the ball is non-spherical is menial, and the error in treating the entire trajectory as that of a spherical object is so minute it can be disregarded. Remember, every calculation done in engineering or science is a simplification.

PS. nice literary technique work some juxtaposition in next time.

Here fishy, fishy, fishy.... Be kind, pratice catch and release.

You missed out the most important one about porting:

Spiral porting imparts a spin that stabilizes the ball in flight. :spit_take

Oh my. The memories of rec.sport.paintball... The more things change the more they stay the same.

IIRC Steve , those balls shot from that barrel also created enough forward vector thrust that they peirced the bulk head of one red Porche 914 that may have been in the line of fire.

There HAS to be a good story that's not being told...

RR - I think the story has gotten a little distorted over time. That ball pierced the ENGINE BLOCK of the 914 and ended up intact sitting on the driver's seat.

The most amazing part of the whole story was that the engine ran afterwards and had apparently tripled its output; we haven't heard back from the Porsche engineers yet, but it was kinda funny to hear a bunch of guys talking about vooortexes with a german accent.
