AO NorCal vs. SoCal? Can it happen?

Hey all. I've been thinking about this for a while now and wanted to get your take on it. I was checking out Zak Vetter's website a few months back and found the pages with the NorCal v. SoCal games. (http://zakvetter.com/pages/paintball...ocal/main.html) Its been a few years since the last one (at least from what I can see), and was thinking that it might be time for another one. The games were held in Atascadero, just North of San Luis Obispo on the 101. I have contacted Zak and he said that he thinks it would be good to get this going again and has offered his help if needed.

I live in San Luis, and a new field opened up here last year. It's called Gladiator Paintball, http://www.gladiatorpaintballpark.com/. It's about 10 minutes from San Luis on the 1. It is on land owned by Camp San Luis, the army base. I've yet to play there (I've mostly been playing woodsball with friends), but I stopped by there today to get a good look at it. I spoke with one of the guys working there about an AO day. It turns out he was at one of the N vs. S games a few years ago. He said it sounds like a good idea. I spoke with the owner, Gary, and he agreed as well. They would definately be able to handle a large group. There was a fraternity there today with about 100 or so people, plus another group of about 35 firefighters, then some walk-ons as well, and everyone we being taken care of. It seems to be a very nice field and the people running it are trying to make sure people have a good time, not let newbies get owned by pros wanting to see how many welts they can dish out. It is field paint only there, and they are using DXS Triumph at $45/case. Gary said that depending on the number of people we get they would be able to discount field fees and probably some other fees, but we will have to see how many people we actually get. There are about 8 or 9 fields there with everything from plywood bunkers to buses and an airplane. They also have an airball field. I think this would be a very nice place to have a big group, plus they can get pizza out there or there are a bunch of places close by in town.

What I would like to know from you guys is if it would be possible to do. Would it be somthing you would make the 3 hour drive fom LA or SF (or wherever) to do? I know that SoCal had a great turnout just a few weeks ago. So, please respond to the poll if it is somthing you would be interested in doing, or if you don't think it is a good idea. Leave some input here if you have any suggestions about anything that could make this happen. Thanks in advance.

I voted yes but I have to modify the poll and say in my opinion it is only a good idea.

One this to consider, Food and Lodging. See it may be local for you but my guess is that 98% of the others will need to get a Hotel or make other arrangements.

The one bad part about having it in the middle of the sate is that NO ONE lives there, which means everyone has to: A; Travel and B; find a place to stay.

My guess is that this will limit the attendance. I only know about 5 or 6 people that will travel and most of them are up here in Nor*Cal.

    Just my $0.02!
    ......You know you want one!!

Yeah, I know that travel time, food and lodging are of course going to be the biggest issues with this. Gary, the owner, said that there is camping available on the base, but I'd have to look into that. I know that right now a lot of people may be a little strapped for cash, and I know how it is. Like you said, for me being local it's a great idea because I don't have to travel and find a place to stay. So I guess I'm just looking to see if you guys would be willing to make the trek. If not, no big deal. I am in between the north and south, so it would be something I could do to make it out to another get together. Who knows, maybe it's something that can be done, just not right now.

we did a nor cal so cal last year at CPP in Castaic and it turned out great. The thing is about having the event in the middle of the state is that most of the people who are maggers are in the socal area, there would be a BIG migration north. We choose CPP last year cause it was a little better for the socalers but the northern peeps had to travel a little too. Personally, I think an event in the area of Bakersfield would be prime cause it would be about the same travel time for both groups. I would love to have a "real" game where we had a special banner or shirts made just for the event.

        My two cents.

I believe this was attempted before, but like mentioned above only a handful of NorCal could actually go. We got alot more SoCal members, as seen from the 50+ at Clareball, we got the numbers. If this were to happen, I recommend to bring it closer south. Just my 2 cents. Go for a field that's in the middle for both groups.

Also, most guys prefer fields that allow you to bring their own paint. Field paint can sometimes be really bad & unpredictable and just ruin your whole day ending up with jams and breaks all day long.

We have people in Sac and further north. Bakersfield is about 4 hours from SF and Orange County is 6.5, so San Luis Obispo would be in the middle for most NorCalers.

In the effort of fairness to all parties, since the last gathering was in Castaic, the next one should be further north and I don't mean Bakersfield or San Luis Obispo, I mean Modesto.

Does this mean I will not travel? No! I travel to almost every California game that is organized here on AO.

There are a couple options, there is also Paranoid Paintball located in Lemoore, www.paranoidpaintball.com is their website.

From what i have seen there are only about 2 to 4 guys in SoCal that would even try to make the drive. You guy know who you are. The rest and I am really calling out the guys in Orange County and further south. I have yet to see any of you travel beyond the Inland Empire for a game with the exception of one guy who will remain nameless.

Set it up where ever you like, I will more that likely make the trek no matter where it is as long as there are no conflicts with other things.

                Good Luck

Hmmm ok how to put this......

I wanted a norcal socal game forever, the castaic game was awesome, but still we all couldn't even decide where to eat...lol

I think as hard as we try, the 2 groups will hold different views, I hope we can make one big cali game, but I'm pretty skeptical. First, socal game have drawn up to 60 players, without leaving socal. Bottom line is, we leave home and we lose players. I know the drive sucks. For both parties.

But, Its not fair to make norcal drive umpteen hours back and forth, just because socal has 3 times as many players. And the socal guys don't want to drive out of home to play with a group that would probably be smaller than usual.

I would love to make this happen, hell maybe socal should charter a couple damn buses and trek up north. Lol

I want to play with norcal, and maybe this game can happen with months of planning and discussion, but it would be a lot of work, finding lodging, food, paint deals, mass logistics....like how to caravan 50+ socalers up north.....

It would be a big resposibility and I don't know if anyone is up to it, or takes into acount the amount of work.

Me and vetter have talked for hours about such a game, and it always ends in a draw.

But to be fair, I say the socal boys should go north, how far? Idk. Castiac wasn't so bad at all. But the farther north we go , you take into acount it now becomes a 2day event. A lot of small detail. Like where to rent a couple buses from....lol, hey can we rent those trucks the military uses to cart troups around? Lol

I'd definitely be down for a Nor vs SoCal event. CPP wasn't that bad of a drive at all, and it was a great time. I'd be willing to meet 1/2 way for a N vs S game. It's only fair.

The fact is that a lot of people won't drive very far. There have been very valid points made, and it's stuff we have to deal with in order to make it happen. Hopefully it does.

My brother lives in San Jose and was the one that got me into Paintball and my Mag in the first place. It would be great to hang with my bro and go head to head on the feild like the ol' days. But unless the N vs S happens within the next few weeks, we wouldnt be able to make it since he plans to move to Texas in early April.

Sounds to me like you need to make the trip to Modesto on March 14th then.

It will give you and your "bro" a chance to play together. Any game before April is unlikely.

Don't wait, make your plans NOW!
