Sichelschnitt (Sickle Stroke) called for an enormously powerful armored fist to smash apart the lines at the Ardennes forest using the blitzkrieg - a new form of war using fast-moving armored columns linked by excellent radio communications and supported by close air attacks. Everyone else was expecting a replay of World War I - but instead of static warfare, they were now faced with a war of high-speed, fluid movement, and round-the-clock combat.
With Russia nipping at its heels and US and British forces coming in from the west, the German army is moving west from Germany at a rapid pace to what will be a pivotal battle with the Allied forces. For Germany, this is the last-ditch effort to pull together all of its resources and retake the majority of western Europe. In a remarkable feat of logistics, the Allied forces managed to get its hundreds of tanks, armored vehicles and guns down narrow paths through the huge Ardennes Forest, which the French previously believed was impassable to modern armies.
The two forces are narrowing in on one another for a battle that may decide the outcome of the war. Allied troops can stop the westward advance and be in position to take over Berlin and end the war, or Germany can roll over the Allied forces and recapture much of western Europe - putting Germany in a strategic location for building ICBM launch sites that can now reach the USA, and for building ports along northern France to stop the influx of Allied troops and machinery along the Atlantic supply routes.
