    Rumors

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I've heard a *rumor* circulating in the frozen tundra here (aka Toronto) that (and I quote): "Tom Kaye is working on a new e-mag using only 40psi behind the ball".

Any confirmations or declaimations out there AGD?

Well, the E-Mag puts 60psi behind the ball with the current valve and Tom is working on new methods to fix ball breakage, so it's a possiblity. From there I won't say anymore.

yep, to add to the explaination. Current mags have been tested to around 60 psi behind the ball pressure. 350 psi is only the chamber pressure, by the time the air expands into the bolt and powertube the volume has increased so much that only 60 psi sees the ball.

Lets use this time to dispell some myths.

Myth 1: Mags hare high pressure guns. Untrue, mags have an internal regulator with a fixed volume chamber. The regulator fills the chamber to around 350 psi.

Myth 2: 350 psi sees the ball. Untrue, Pressure is inversely proportional to volume. Since pressure and volume is fixed in a dump chamber, and volume expands as the pressure fills the bolt and the powertube. The volume has expanded so much as to decrease the pressure to 60 psi at its peak.

Not being a smart allec, i'm truly curious.

If that's true, and I don't doubt you because I have no evidence to the contrary, why do mags break balls? Ever.

My ball detent is set properly, I have a good paint to barrel match, I have a powerfeed, I use a richochet hopper and I don't fire all that fast. So why would my mag break balls if it's not the pressure?

Pressure isnt the end all factor to ball breakage. Alot of manufacturers would like you to think otherwise.

The barrel is also the breach in a mag. Alot of manufacturers build barrels out of tolerance. When I had my smart parts progressive for may classic mag it would break one in every 10 balls literally. It was definately out of tolerance. When I swapped it out to a lapco bigshot I could shoot cases without breakage.

Another factor that seemed to help was the addition of a foamie bolt. The mag bolt moves from 0-20fps in less than 10/1000 of a second. If your steel bolt happens to impact the paintball that rolled a little too forward in the breach you will end up with a mess.
