Lvl X works fine w/ gold spring but sticks with red?

Odd problem with my Lvl X.

I've played several times indoors with the gold spring, and fps set to around 260. Worked flawlessly every time. Buty then I installed the red spring yesterday in anticipation to play outdoors this weekend, and the bolt sticks after 2 shots on average. What am I doing wrong? Also, the chrono showed 336 fps. I know that I didn't overtighten the thumb screw, I always hand tight it.

So I put back the gold spring, turned the velocity screw down, and everything went back to normal.

So my question is, should I simply leave the gold spring in there and crank the velocity up to 280? What issues could that cause? I realize that the gold spring is much shorter than the red one.

no issues other than chopping can occur. however the fact it is sticking on the red can mean other problems. is it sticking forward or backward?

Looking through the breach, I can say that the bolt has a hard time firing. The spring returns the bolt fine, but once back in its initial state, it sticks. Pressing several times on the trigger will eventually make it fire again, but it sticks every so often.

Sounds like you have too tight a carrier.

That combined with a stronger spring or a lack of oil is inducing bolt stick.

Remember, you want the largest carrier that doesn't leak, not the smallest that allows it to fire.

Try a .5 larger carrier (use the same carrier o-ring) and feed her some oil. That should fix the problem.

Shooting hot for a certain spring will just be a bit rougher on paint is all.

Looks definitely like a carrier problem. I oiled the heck out of it, and the red spring fires fine... When set to 340 fps, but anything less makes it stick.

I didn't have time to mingle with carrier sizes, so I put the gold spring in and set it at 280 and played a few games saturday afternoon. I didn't shoot much, maybe 500 or 600 balls. No ball breaks, but I did get a few chuffs throughout the day.

It'll have to do for now, I might mingle with the carriers next weekend before we play on saturday.

          Will keep you guys posted.

            I hope you meant 280.

Alright. I had a very similar problem today. I have a used X-Valve (+ULT) that is leaking down the barrel, enough to cause problems. I just got some parts from AGD and replaced the .5 carrier with a 0 and the short spring with a medium (red) spring. The leak is fixed, but i get some sticking too. The velocity is consistently in the 275-295 range but the lvl 10 randomly chufs. Sometimes every shot or every other, sometimes every 10-20 shots. It had some bolt stick after the changes, but i oiled it and that was resolved. (I have 1 shim in the lvl 10 and 2 in the ULT) Any thoughts???

Concerning the lvl 10, how far shoul it activate? If i plug the breech totally it chufs, and works properly, but it seems to have the force of a lvl 7 if i only plug about half or slightly more. Is this normal?

The level 10 works in the first 0.25" of the bolt's stroke, after that, it will have full force.

As for the leak, you want to use oil before every day you play and keep her oiled.
Then you want the largest carrier that doesn't leak after you get an o-ring broken in with about 5000 dry fires.
Only use shims if the bolt sticks after "Level 10ing". Do not use them unless you have bolt stick, and then add them 1 at a time until the bolt stick fails to appear.

Springs are for different velocities. If want to shoot at 285 fps, use the longest spring that allows the marker to begin to fully cycle about 20 fps below your target velocity.
