What is the purpose of the rail?

Hello all, I'm thinking of making my own mag and I was wondering what purpose the rail serves that a one piece body couldn't handle. My current theory is that it helps with manufacturing difficulty? Also, does anyone have any upclose pictures of the level 10 bolt? I've heard that it is a two part piece that is welded together, is that true? Thanks.

Well back before 2000 or so, mags had stainless bodies, so the body and rail couldn't be one piece. I don't know how much more expensive it is to make a one piece body/rail than making them separate parts.

Hereare two pics of the L10.

You can see the line in the front of the bolt in the second pic. That's where the back part ends and the front insert begins. The front insert has a smaller ID, as you can see in the first pic.
