    Old aluminum mag trigger frame

    Hey guys,

I'm purhasig an old, pre-carbon fiber aluminum mag trigger frame and had some questions. As I understand it, these frames were cast aluminum, correct?

Can they be stripped, polished and re-ano'd to a gloss finish?

I figured they could since I thought that these are the same trigger frames that SP used to ano as part of their automag packages, but I thought I'd check here first.

Being cast aluminum, they cannot be anodized (affordably, at least). I've had luck stripping and painting them with marine paints intended for boats, but if your strip and paint with spray paint they oxidize quickly and chip. A good bet is powdercoating.

They are a little rough for annodizing. If you want to paint it, you will need to prep the aluminum with zincate. Zincate will etch the aluminum and provide a zinc coating that will prevent oxidixing. It will allow the paint to properly adhere.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

How can it be to rough to anodize? How did Smart Parts do it originaly? I didn't think they made their own milled aluminum trigger frames. Look here, this is another AO'er's original Smart Mag. It looks like it has the old cast aluminum trigger frame and it is clearly anodized:

Maybe SP polished the frames smooth before sending them to get ano'd? What do you think

It can be annodized. It is just a rougher finish if it hasn't been milled or polished. It won't look as good. All aluminum is originally cast. Unless aluminum has been extruded or rolled, then chances are it is in its cast state anyway.
