Gun was a blender this weekend...

    Hi everyone,

So, this past weekend didn't go so smooth. I had posted last week about my New valve and how it was leaking down the barrel. I changed the carrier down a size and the leaking stopped. I was playing this weekend, and aired it up. Now it was pretty cold outside, I was running Compressed air of course. After I aired up, it was leaking out the little hole on the side of the valve, to the left of the X. I looked at my tank and it read 1000 psi. I degassed, and filled the tank, aired up again, and there were no problems. Chronoed a little sparaticly +/-10 (But part of that might be the fields chronos, which are beat to hell and never seem to be accurate. The marker seemed to be shooting consistently though) First game, I was ripping, then near the end, crack and splat, there were bits and pieces coming out of my barrel. Then I was shooting ok. Game over. Grabbed a squeegie, and ran it through before we played the next game (Back to Back). That game went fine. Rest of the day, I would get a few breaks here and there. I chalked it up to the cold weather and the effect on the paint. During the day, I kept checking to make sure that the gun wasn't leaking. Nothing.

Finally, the last game. Major problems. The leaking was coming down the barrel again. Maybe even a little more than when I first got the valve. I played it out, and headed home afterwards.

My questions are what to do about the leaking. It seems to be on and off. Should I go down one more carrier?

Also, I noticed that the paint that I was using was alittle fragile in the cold. Would that be the reason for the breaks? Next time I will not underestimate the cold, and spring for the cold weather paint. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Here's been my experience in the cold. I don't know how cold you're talking but I played last week in ~25f:

Seems to me o-rings get a little stiff in this cold. I also started to develop a slight barrel leak throughout the day that would stop if I fired a few shots. I wondered if it was just o-rings getting cold and hard, it seemed OK when I got it home.

I had been slightly underboring on my barrel, I noticed as it got colder this was a recipe for disaster. I switched to a .689 back and didn't have any more breaks at all that day.

Make sure you use some oil before every game when it's that cold, it seems to help. I normally do a couple of drops, I did 6 or 7 into my ASA and it seemed to help keep the leaking at bay a bit more.

You may have other issues on top of that but that's been my experience. Check all your o-rings (including the on/off) and see if any have broken or cracked.

Everything that you said, makes perfect sense. I actually underbored a little, and had run oil through a few days before, but probably should have ran a little more through. It was about 30* F and the paint was very fragile. I did a little drop test with my paint and my buddies weather paint. From ~3 ft, mine cracked on impact with the cement. His bounced. This is the second time I have had problems with cold weather and paint. I will try not to let it happen again. Thanks for the input!!!

Yeah, I would definitely stop underboring, it's terrible in the cold in my experience.

The other thing I've noticed that helps is trying to keep the paint warm. Sounds obvious but I think sometimes you forget (I know I do) that you've been hauling around a pod of paint for 2 hours that you haven't used that is now freezing cold.

When I play in the cold, I never carry 4 pods unless I know I will use them all, I generally only take one or two.. and then I refill my hopper out of my pods after the game and refill the pods out of my car.

Especially if you're already using brittle paint.. getting it cold is definitely worse.

Have to be careful on days where it starts out cold and then warms up too. Had issues a few weeks back when it started out around 30-35 degrees and warmed up in the afternoon. As the paint got warmer, it expanded. I eventually had to got up to .691 by the end of the day to keep it from breaking.
