I just recetly bought a used Automag. OK so I have a leak down the barrel. I bought a oring kit from AGD and replaced the powertube oring. I even replaced other things like the reg seat and orings in the on/off just becuase they needed it. Anyway HOw large should my spacer be? WHen I took the bolt out last night I took the spacer out of the power tube and put it on the bolt just too see how the fit was. The spacer is .220 and seems to slid very freely on the bolt. If I hold it up to the light, there is a gap between the inner diameter of the spacer and that rod inside the bolt. Could this gap be where the air is escaping from while it is in the powertube? I plan to buy a spacer kit, but is there anything I can do in the interim?

The spacers vary by length not diameter. There sole purpose is to change the distance to the powertube oring from the front of the bolt. By placing a longer spacer in the powertube you push the oring farther back. If the spacer is too long, the oring will be too far back and a gap will exist between the back of the bolt stem and the oring which will cause a leak down the barrel. Conversely, if the powertube spacer is too short, the bolt will contact the oring too soon and it could prevent the bolt from going back far enough to allow the sear to catch. If this happens you will experience bolt stick.
As the sear wears, the bolt sits farther forward. A powertube spacer that was the correct length when new may now allow a leak. A shorter spacer will fix the leak and allow continued operation for a while longer until the sear is worn enough that it becomes unreliable.Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts. -
