Classic RT being a pain in the butt

So, I have been having issues with my RT since I got it. It seems to leak no matter what I do. I ordered an RT parts kit, replaced every oring in it and it still leaks. The banjo bolt orings are fine/new as well. What happens is that when I screw in the tank it will start leaking between the valve and body of the gun (mainly on the righ side of the gun). When I start pulling the trigger it will go away for a a little while, then return. I have oiled the gun and all the parts with airtool oil but still the problem continues. Also, the second leak I have occurs when I screw in the tank, it makes a popping noise then leaks down the barrel. At this point the pin for the trigger has no pressure to it so pulling the trigger does nothing. This leak however, only occurs if the other one doesn't.

    Thanks,

    Chris

If you hold the trigger and it leaks, its either an on/off leak or a regulator leak.

Also a possibility is that the powertube unscrewed from the front. Ive had many classic rt's in which the laser welds broke there.

I suggest you replace the on off rings, and the regulator seat rings.

Another symptom it seems to have is that when i first screw on my full tank, it will go full auto by just holding the trigger back, an there is air coming out of the barrel. It still leaks pretty bad out the side of the body, but that leak down the barrel seems to have stopped.

Yeah, look at the regulator section...that would be your best bet.

quick question...on the old Rt's like mine, is there suppose to be a piece that fits into the body and frame at the back, like there is at the front to align it?

It must be leaking out one of the holes along the valve body/reg because everything has been replaced, oiled and checked. The leak down the barrel has not occured in about 3 fills (i have a scuba), but the leak out the back of the gun continues. The brass piece in the reg has a new oring as well. Could it be that the springs in the regulator need to be greased? Damn, this is is impossible and it only has 5 pieces! Cockers are easier than this thing...

If it is leaking out the back, it is either the reg piston, or the reg seat. Make sure you are not cranked up to high. If it has L10 and the reg piston hasn't been upgraded since new it should be changed.

It doesn't have level 10. I just tried doing that trick were you flip the rubber piece inside the reg piston, but it looked real bad. I might just have to get one from you. lol I might as well make a house account with you. haha

                  Your going to hell

If the piston seal flip didn't work out for you buy a new one like tuna said. They aren't expensive

Are you 100% positive you don't have the reg adj too high? You have a chrono at the house? The valve is designed to gas out when adj too high. Never seen one of those pistons just take a dirt nap like that. Installing a lvl 10 is the only time I've seen them just vent for no reason due to the extra oomph they need to fire which the older pistons sometimes can't handle.

EDIT: Is it possible you flipped the piston seal back on the bad side? This fix has been 100% so far but like I've said before not sure how long it'll last. If done properly, it'll get you through the week till yours comes in from Tuna.

I still think you have your velocity up to high. Good test is to fully degas the marker and completely unscrew the back of your reg. Reinstall it hand tight or a good 5 treads then air it up. Use a allen key and start turning it CCW at the same time pulling the trigger. Usually you'll get a leak down the barrel until you get the velocity up enough for the bolt to seal. If it starts firing and doesn't leak, that's a good sign. You should be in the low 200 FPS range. Get to your local field and dial it in.

Great post Tuna. The same thing happened to me, so I decided to lube everything, but when I took out the reg piston it fell apart and was causing the full auto....

I tried unscrewing it all the way out until it didn't shoot then slowly while firing I screwed it in and it still leaked. I'm about 90% sure I put the oring in the right way, but I have a new reg piston coming in anyways.

                      Edit:

It does look like the reg piston had been taken apart previously as there were faint marks on it. So that could be the reason it didn't work.

OK, so an update on this thing:

I got the reg piston from tunaman (thanks) installed and it still leaked, which dashed my hopes. I got pissed and took the valve apart again. This time i pulled the valve pin out of the valve and replaced what seemed to be worn orings. They were red in color as well as the plastic middle piece with orings from my kit. After I got that done it continued to leak still, which made me thing it may be the oring from inbetween the regulator and valve, replaced that and wow, it doesn't leak. However, it RT's like a bastard and I can't get it to single shot at all. Then if I rt for awhile it gets bolt stick and leaks. Now, after all that it started leaking out the back again...which makes me think that there is some nome living inside it. I just don't know what to do next...??? Could I mail it to someone and have them look at it? I am running a 850psi output tank.

seems so. I was hoping I would have it fixed for stalingrad so I could dominate those russians, but alas that won't happen. It will be the trusty STO again this year.
