More ULT shims will allow the on-off to open sooner so it increases the available time to charge the front chamber. Also, more shims allows the on-off to open farther so it recharges faster.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

when i had this issue i tried a million things and couldnt get it to work properly. turned out i just needed to adjust the the tightening on the rear screw. to tight or too lose and it changes how far the on off pin has to travel to meet the sear. for me the best was hand tight then about a quarter turn with an allen wrench. bassicaly just tight enough that it was not easily unscrewed by hand.

Well, upon inspection, my ULT already had 5 shims in it (they all looked like ULT shims, not Lvl 10 shims.) So I put one more in and then the gun wouldn't even fire.

So then I tried starting from scratch with the stock setup - two shims. The gun fired, but leaked a little upon airup, and the UlT was recharging very slowly. Then I added one more shim and it seems to be doing okay - but it's only good until about 10 bps, any faster and the on/off just won't keep up with my fingers. The trigger is soft enough to walk, but again, the ULT just won't keep up. Is this something that will get better as the gun breaks in?

The previous owner only put about 1 tank full of air through it, and he didn't know how much it had been fired by the owner before him. Judging by the condition of everything - it looks like not much. I doubt this gun has even seen a field yet.

The other thing is that my scuba is only filling to around 1600psi right now - which should be enough, but maybe enough to slow the recharge? I may try a 4th shim but it's pretty close right now - it would just be nice to be able to walk it every once in awhile.

I'm wondering also if some other lube might work better. I'm using a very old bottle of Gold Cup, which might be wearing off too soon? I've always used Dow 33 on my MQ valve in my Cocker, and it keeps things lubed very well and doesn't wear off very fast.

Dow 33 is more for static parts. Because mag tolerances are tight, you want the lightest oil you can use. All the oil is for, is to moisten the orings and provide lubrication to reduce friction. If you need excessive lubrication to get things working properly, then things are too tight and the lubrication is just a band-aid fix for the real problem which is usually related to proper tuning.

The mag should work fine off 1600psi. As long as its 200psi above the output pressure of the tank regulator you shouldn't notice any shootdown due to bottle pressure unless your bottle reg is really restrictive.
