    Shims

    On my second mag i was trying to fix a leak. Going up a carrier size stopped the leak. However with 2 shims the lvl 10 didnt reset, and with 3 shims it resets but has a small leak. Im not sure where to go from here. Also, how do you tell which shim exactly is the next carrier size up and which is a size down? Im assuming the number of grooves means it gets smaller.

      When tuning a level 10 bolt, remove all the shims first. Then use the largest carrier that doesn't cause a leak. Always use the same white carrier oring in each of the carriers when changing them. The carrier adjusts the tension on the oring, which is critical in the level 10 system for proper operation.

      Then, after the level 10 is properly adjusted, you can put the shims back. Most of the time you will never need them. Shims only adjust how far the bolt needs to move before it can vent air. Most of the time the bolt can move far enough on its own, even if there is a breach blockage. If the gun fires, or vents air in any way, then adding shims will not fix any reset issues.
      Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

        Ok thanks alot. I think I have it. I had one that didnt leak but i was stuck between 2 and 3 shims. So I dropped down another size (pretty much the one that makes the oring the tightest). I had to use 4 shims to get the bolt to reset, but it seems pretty good now.

          If you need to use shims to get the bolt to reset under normal conditions, you are going to have problems down the road. Take the shims out and tune without them. They can induce leaks that are not related to carrier operation and can make you think you need a tighter carrier than is really needed. That will cause bolt stick later when the oring dries (the oil blows off it) due to use.
