    help, smoking emag board

A buddy was given a nice emag ( jerk) , and it came with no battery so he hasnt tested it. one of the solder leads for the noid was un soldered (the one closer to the top of the board) so i resoldered it. ( i repair cell phones, i use a microscope and I have great solder skills) when i connected my Xmag battery, his board started smoking.

bad noid or bad board? when i unsoldered it, put the battery back in, the board powered up fine.

Have you tried the patch? Also the positive on the back sometimes is frayed and causes a short...

It could be the solenoid. I think the circuit is active low, if I remember correctly, which means the solenoid is supplied with power on one lead and then the other side is switched to ground by power switching device. If the solenoid has a short to its case, it can draw more than its rated current all the time as soon as power is supplied to the board. You can check that part. Do a continuity test from each lead to the case of the solenoid. It should be an open circuit.

Most likely, the problem is the output switching device. It is probably fried. If so, it could be providing a full "on" condition all the time. This would result in a high power dissipation across the device. The full current condition would cause heating and a burning smell if the device is fried.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.
