Level 10 "fine tuning" per AutomagsUK website... why do it?

The above link will take you to the AutomagsUK level 10 bolt section. It tells you the basics of how to get it set up with the stock spring. The last two lines read as follows:

"This configuration should get you working and out on the field. The next step in fine tuning is to switch to the longest spring and see if you can get the marker firing reliably in the 280-290 fps range with that spring.""

Alrighty then . My Level 10 works. WHAT exactly will switching to a longer spring do for me? -AND- will it effect air efficiency?

    Thanks in advance ya'll!

I think the longer spring puts more back-force on the bolt, making it even "softer" on paint.

^^^ Correct. AThomas has a good how to lvl 10 in the tech forms. basically the long silver spring isn't meant to be used as is. Most of the times It'll either bolt stick or not cycle at all. If it does cycle, your usually shooting over 300.

Gold spring will be the softest on paint.

No. Long spring is softest. Long spring is mostly unreliable at best. Clip it for better results.

Yes, you'll want to clip it in a 1/4 or 1/2 a coil at a time until you get the proper tension for your setup. Ideally, you should be using a bolt spring that allows you to shoot about 20fps above the lowest velocity that the gun will cycle at. That will give you reliability and a light force on the paint. So, if you want to shoot at 280fps, you should be aiming to get your marker to start firing at 260fps and then turn it up to 280 for field operation. Even if it starts at 265, you should be fine.

Start with the unclipped spring and the velocity turned down. Turn up the velocity until the gun starts to shoot and see what the velocity it. It should be high using the grey spring. Clip the end coil off the spring and do it again. Make sure you only clip one end of the spring and install it against the bolt. The flat end needs to go against the front body washer. Keep clipping the spring and trying it until the gun shoots in the range you need.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

Thanks very much for the replies. I am very grateful that the authorities stepped in and cleaned up the mess in my head created by that one contradictory response .

Today, I'll head over to the local field with springs and some good wire cutters .

Keep in mind that the gold spring is about as short as you ever need, so there's no point in cutting that far down. Also, remember athomas' post above about minimum velocity. With a longer spring, your minimum velocity without bolt stick is higher, so you can get to where you can't shoot at 250 fps for something like indoor or night games. A longer spring can bounce off a tight paint to bore match as well.
