sear question

what is the best tool to cut the sear? need to remove some material for a new project.

would a band saw be acceptable? i have access to a small student machine shop.

Should work just fine, hacksaw will too. Grinder to smoothe everything out and you should be fine.

A Dremel with a cutting wheel works well.
