    anodizing a barrel

I think this qualifies as a technical question. If you anodize a barrel to a different color than it was originally won't the inner diameter of the barrel be affected? You could probably plug the ends but how do you deal with the porting? I'm just looking for information so my barrel doesn't get screwed up.

I answered this in you other thread (why post 2ce )

Anodizing is just "dying" the aluminum - it will not change the bore size

Thanks for the info! When I posted here, no one had replied to it in the main forum. I figured I'd try getting feedback where the technically oriented people can see it. Besides my original post was getting squashed by other threads and I didn't want to keep upping it.

it wont mess up the bore size, but it will mess up the polishing on the inside, but you can take some cotton balls, long plastic closehanger broken, & some car polish. put it on a drill & go at the inside

Yes, Annodizing can mess with the bore size if they do the inside of the barrel.... It adds a layer of aluminum oxide to the surface that can be a few thousandths of an inch thick. Im sure that companies that annodize dont mess with the bore of the barrel.

It's actually unavoidable. To get a good annodize they strip the inside and outside of the barrel and redo it. The difference, if you have a good annodizer will not be more than .001 inch.

I was always under the impression that anodizing removed a little bit of material. I was told thats why my stock cocker barrel was threaded after it was anodized. So the anodizing process doesn't remove enough to make the fit of the barrel loose. I could swear I read somewhere that with enough time, you could actually eat through a piece of aluminum. I dont remember if it was the actual anodizing or the preparation of the aluminum that was reported to remove material. I can't verify any of this, but at some point thats what someone told me.

I thought if you got it anodized they didn't do the inside of the barrel? The manufacturer might, but if you sent it off to someone like KP Customs I thought they left the middle out?
