If you're only getting like two inserts I'd get like a .688 and a .686 .693 will be too large for most paints leading to a bad paint-barrel match. .688 will fit most medium bore paints and .686 will fit most smaller paints.

hey, i think that if you can afford the freak its a great buy. but the whole idea behind the freak barrel is to have the different inserts so that you can find a perfect paint/bore match with any paint you have to use. if you only get 1 or 2 inserts. you may as well save your self 100$ and just get a cp or 2. IMO they shoot just as nice as any other barrel when matched well with the paint also i wouldnt advise getting a .693 insert due to the fact that i cant think of a single ball that uses that insert.

.689 and .687 are best, pick up the .684 if you shoot diablo, and the .691 if you shoot seconds/BE paint. You won't use any of the other 4 inserts (Too small or too big)

It's actually a better deal if you buy the barrel and 2 extra inserts than the kit, which has 4 inserts you'll never use. The barrel (Back, tip & 1 insert) is still cheaper than a boomy.

The freak is a great buy, but I feel you would be soooo much happier with the J&J Edge system. You get like 4 backs, .682,685,688,691 i believe. You get those and a front with it. For like 50 bucks more, you can get all of the fronts in which you wil have a 8",10,12,14,16 inch barrel i beleive and it all costs about the same as a freak.

The edge is a nice system, but it has some disadvantages for those of us running mutiple thread types.

I'd need a grand total of 12 edge backs for my gear. I need only 4 Freak backs (Mag, Angel, Cocker, Spyder) and can recycle my set of inserts between them. Insert based systems are more flexible for this reason, and the Freak is the only insert based system that supports Mag Twist-lock barrels (OTP & ACI systems can't due to the design of the insert).

I might pick up an Angel Edge anyways, as I have a J&J collection going, and it would look unique. (Need some J&J Stainless Cocker & Angel barrels for that collection though)

You make a valid point, but for someone like me that is going back to a cocker and sticking with that, then it should be fine. The kind of guy I am, I will of course get a freak eventually anyhow since it's such a sweet system.

I shoot anarchy, and I never venture outside .679 and .682. You would end up paying about as much as a used freak set, just buying a couple inserts a back, and a front. If you just want a couple, get a .682, .687, and a .691, so you would have a small medium and a large. Just what I would recomend.

Although it may look a little fruity i think aradus is the way to go no need to worry about stepping on the insert or loosing one of the backs, a twist and lock system.

Seen the Aradus, very unimpressed. Cheap look & feel, don't trust the locking.

Freak or Edge all the way.
