when i crank up the velocity too much i get an air leak out of the velocity adjuster. when i put the velocity down too much i get a leak out of the barrel. i have it in the middle and it seems to be shooting fine, but i was wondering if this is what normally happens if the velocity is put too high/low

Yes the back of the valve is a regulator if you turn it up to high it vents out so that something doesnt get blown apart. When you screw it out too far the oring doesnt seal and will leak.

Try a shorter power tube spacer. That should help reduce the leaking out the front when you turn the velocity down.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.
